Hurricane Relief: Information and Resources
K The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is deeply concerned about the health and welfare of people on the Gulf Coast who have been directly impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Please visit the AAO Web site at www.aao.org/katrinainfo.cfm to communicate with colleagues in need and to provide assistance.
On this site, under "Colleague-to-Colleague Communication," eyecare professionals will find links for posting messages. Those impacted by the hurricane can post needed items or let others know how they can help. There is also an information and request for help form from the Tulane University Ophthalmology Program and a link to LSU's Department of Ophthalmology Web site for colleagues and friends to communicate with department faculty and staff.
Under "Updates and Academy Information," those impacted by the hurricane and needing assistance may e-mail the Academy at katrina_info@aao.org or call toll-free (866) 561-8558.
"Annual Meeting Information," also on the AAO site, requests that those who are displaced provide their temporary address to the Academy by sending an e-mail to katrina_info@aao.org. Resources for patients who may need eyeglasses and other relief services are advised to contact the Lions Web site at www.lions-katrina.org and/or LensCrafters' Gift of Sight Program at www.givethegiftofsight.com.
"Information for Displaced Physicians and Residents" informs volunteers that The Department of Health and Human Services is no longer accepting individual medical or relief worker volunteer applications due to the overwhelming response. For information on individual states still seeking volunteers, visit the AMA Web site at www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/15474.html.
HHS resources on Medicare waivers for HIPAA disclosures during emergencies, and more, are available at www.hhs.gov/katrina/index.html, and you may also select a PDF file with a Q and A from the Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company about liability.
