Topcon Healthcare, Inc., has announced the acquisition of Intelligent Retinal Imaging Systems (IRIS), a US-based company that is known for its cloud-based retinal screening technology. This acquisition strengthens Topcon’s Healthcare from the Eye initiative by expanding the use of ocular data and AI-assisted screening across both primary care and eyecare settings.
IRIS’s platform integrates with electronic medical records, supports a wide range of imaging hardware, and uses artificial intelligence to assist in early diagnosis of retinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy. IRIS’s capabilities will be integrated into Harmony®, Topcon’s cloud-based, connected-care platform. The integration will bolster bidirectional communication between primary care providers and eyecare providers, support shared clinical decision-making, and help reduce patient leakage across systems. With this acquisition, Topcon aims to extend retinal screenings into routine preventive care within primary care practices, federally-qualified health centers, and health systems.
The company also hopes to increase the clinical utility of ocular data and further the reach of the Healthcare from the Eye initiative with tools for the early detection of cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and Alzheimer’s disease.
The IRIS team will continue operations from its headquarters in Pensacola, Florida as an affiliate of Topcon Healthcare.
