Rain Eye Drops LLC launched the RainDrop Dispenser Aid, a newly refined device exclusively licensed from the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). According to a company press release, this patented tool is designed to help Americans who have dry eye apply mono-dose eyedrop vials more easily and accurately.
The company said it refined the device in-house and with manufacturers after exclusively licensing the patented technology from the VA and the University of California, to bring this concept to the market. Originally invented by Julie Schallhorn, MD, MS, an ophthalmologist at SF VA to help veterans who struggled to use single-use vials, the device tackles the frustration of fumbled applications, squeezing too hard, or wasting precious drops, the company said in the press release.
Schallhorn said she noticed a common struggle among her patients, especially those with limited hand strength and dexterity: applying eye drops. "It's difficult to see patients who are suffering and are not served by the current options," said Schallhorn. "This was a major motivation for me."
