The 2023 ASCRS annual meeting will take place May 5-8 in San Diego at the San Diego Convention Center. The ASOA Annual Meeting — for ophthalmic practice management education — will run in conjunction with ASCRS.
ASCRS is not requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination status or a negative test to attend the meeting. Attendees must agree to take necessary precautions while at the event including, but not limited to, following all state and local regulations and guidance of the CDC. Attendees also must agree to not attend the event if they feel ill, have known recent exposure to COVID-19 and/or have tested positive within the last 7 days.
Here are the highlights from this year’s schedule.
MEETING EVENTS
Friday, May 5
• Friday on the Main Stage: Features an interview with incoming and outgoing presidents, Elizabeth Yeu, MD, and Douglas Rhee, MD, respectively.
Other highlights will include the presentation of the inaugural ASCRS Educator Award to Emmett Carpel, MD; an update from the ASCRS Foundation and the bestowal of the Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award to Helena Ndume, MD; and the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame Ceremony, inducting R. Townley Paton, MD, (deceased) and Marguerite McDonald, MD.
• ASCRS Subspecialty Day: ASCRS Cornea Day will feature sessions on topics such as updates in surgical cornea, office-based corneal disease management, complex surgical cornea cases and the ocular surface. Program co-chairs are Marjan Farid, MD, and Francis Mah, MD.
Refractive Day will feature sessions on preoperative, corneal refractive, new technologies, postoperative case scenarios and the Steinert Lecture. Program co-chairs are Daniel Chang, MD, and Cathleen McCabe, MD.
Glaucoma Day will feature an ASCRS/AGS joint symposium, sessions on “Glaukomtecken” as well as Medications, Lasers and Lifestyle, a Surgical Spotlight, the Stephen A. Obstbaum, MD Honored Lecture and the 13th Annual Video Session: Complications and a Reay of Hope. Program co-chairs are Leon Herndon, MD, and Nathan Radcliffe, MD.
• Digital Day: All registrants of ASCRS Subspecialty Day will have access to the new, inaugural Digital Day, a non-CME program sponsored by the Digital Ophthalmic Society that takes place in conjunction with Subspecialty Day. Digital Day will be centered around novel, technology-driven solutions with functional clinical integration. Digital Day will identify the essentials to provide surgeons with advanced topic lectures, protocol development and practice education covering the latest innovations in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital visualization and precision medicine.
The option to express interest in attending Digital Day will pop up when registering for ASCRS Subspecialty Day or the ASCRS Subspecialty Day + ASCRS Annual Meeting.
• Subspecialty Day Exhibit Hall: The ASCRS Subspecialty Day Exhibit Hall offers an opportunity for attendees to connect with exhibitors that pertain to their field. The exhibits for ASCRS Subspecialty Day will be open for a limited time beginning with breakfast, during breaks and at lunch. More than 20 companies were scheduled to exhibit as of press time.
• Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Skills Labs: The Phaco Lab will review basic and advanced phaco practices and procedures, including phaco settings and fluidics, incisions, capsulorhexis, phacoemulsification, nuclear disassembly (using chopping and divide and conquer techniques), cortex removal, anterior vitrectomy and post-cataract wound corneal suturing. The Anterior Segment Surgery Lab will explore various glaucoma procedures, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, Yamane technique, nuclear disassembly, pupil expansion and CTR insertion. In the DMEK/DSAEK Lab, for DMEK, participants will be able to practice the DMEK technique for implantation and positioning of the donor cornea tissue using an artificial anterior chamber and pre-loaded corneal tissue. For DSAEK, participants will be able to practice tissue insertion for DSAEK and positioning of the donor tissue. For the DALK Lab, participants will be able to learn and practice the DALK surgical technique, including graft preparation and implantation. Detailed instruction, including videos with experienced instructors, will guide participants in learning basic DALK techniques, including big bubble and manual dissection.
Saturday May 6
Saturday on the Main Stage: Events include the ASCRS Cornelius Binkhorst, MD, Lecture and Medal, which will be delivered by Eric Donnenfeld, MD. This session will also include an update from EyeSustain, a global coalition of eye societies, organizations and ophthalmologists collaborating to make ophthalmic care and surgery more sustainable, and a guest speaker and panel discussion.
Sunday, May 7
Sunday on the Main Stage: The Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, Lecture and Medal will be presented by Marlene Moster, MD, during the Lindstrom Symposium, which features presentations in the different areas of anterior segment surgery — cornea, refractive, cataract and glaucoma. This session will also include guest speaker Shawn DuBravac, an economist and futurist.

Monday, May 8
Monday on the Main Stage: Events include the ASCRS Innovators Session and the Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innovator’s Lecture and Medal — William Link, PhD, will deliver the Innovator’s Lecture — and The Best of ASCRS, which will wrap up the meeting on the Main Stage with the presentation of a selection of the “Best Papers of Session” winners and discussion among a panel.
