In the last couple of years, we have seen monumental changes in everything we do: the way we see patients, how we communicate, and how we meet and learn from each other.
Those of us who didn’t grow up in the digital age may find these changes challenging or even daunting. However, the newest group of ophthalmologists have heartily embraced these changes and used them to their fullest to expand their practices, expedite learning and communication and grow their brand.
With that in mind, we decided to conduct a survey earlier this year to nominate individuals under the age of 40 who should be recognized and highlighted for their contributions to innovation, research, business, mentorship/education and global health. Nominees were voted on by our selection committee of OM editorial board members and other key contributors. The result is Ophthalmology Management’s inaugural 40 Under 40 list.
WHO ARE THE 40 UNDER 40?
OM’s 40 Under 40 highlights the rising entrepreneurs, influencers, educators and researchers from a variety of subspecialties who have shaped the way we communicate, learn and practice ophthalmology — and are paving the way for what comes next. The winners encompass individuals from private practice and academia as well as those who have made significant contributions to industry, start-up companies and public service.
You may be asking, “why 40 under 40?” Without a doubt some of the greatest ophthalmologists in history are still practicing. So, why not 80 under 80 or 60 under 60?
No one would disagree that some of the most pivotal innovations in ophthalmology have come in the last 30 years. As a result, this next generation of ophthalmologists began their careers with so many advantages — but also a plethora of challenges and changes to the way we practice.
USHERING IN A NEW ERA OF OPHTHALMOLOGY
This is a unique time in medicine and certainly in ophthalmology. When I think about what has happened in the last 10 years, it’s quite remarkable. The shape of medicine has changed probably forever.
Those of us who are over 40 might feel challenged by the permeation of social media, online learning and the impact of digitalization of our world. This group of outstanding ophthalmologists, on the other hand, embraces all of this.
They use it to innovate and have changed what we have considered the standard of teaching, learning and innovating. They have pushed us to accept that reading a book or journal, going to live conferences or attending in-person meetings is no longer the only or best way to do things.
This new generation of doctors use social media, the internet, blogs, podcasts, apps, texting and virtual meetings to learn and communicate their ideas and market themselves. They are astounding in their creative ability to use these digital platforms to share with others what they are doing in their office, operating rooms, labs and classrooms. They contribute to our knowledge and expand all of our skills at lightning speed and in real time. They are excited to work with the industry to bring new technology to the field and to teach and mentor others.
HERE’S TO THE FUTURE
Members of our 40 Under 40 list represent the best in their subspecialties as nominated by their peers. Their accomplishments in the first decade of their careers is nothing short of astounding. We are proud to recognize the 40 Under 40 and look forward to watching their careers and future contributions to the field. OM
