The 2022 ASCRS annual meeting will take place April 22-26, in Washington, D.C., at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The ASOA Annual Meeting — for ophthalmic practice management education — will run in conjunction with ASCRS.
The events will follow pandemic safety measures in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health departments, which includes thermal scanning upon entrance, contactless systems and processes to minimize “touch points” and onsite testing for COVID-19. Attendees are required to show proof of vaccination matching an ID or passport and must wear face masks indoors and during transportation.

MEETING EVENTS
Friday, April 22
• ASCRS Subspecialty Day: ASCRS Refractive Day will feature sessions on evaluating and understanding your patient’s image quality (IQ), making a surgical plan to boost your patient’s IQ, the Steinert Refractive Lecture, modern day techniques and technologies to optimize patient education and postoperative strategies to improve IQ. Program co-chairs are Cathleen McCabe, MD, and Vance Thompson, MD.
Cornea Day will feature sessions on updates on managing keratoconus and corneal ectasia, anterior/posterior lamellar surgery, ocular surface and challenging cornea cases. Program co-chairs are Marjan Farid, MD, and Francis Mah, MD.
Glaucoma Day will feature an ASCRS/AGS joint symposium on how to sharpen your tools and recharge your mind, a session on “Glaukomtecken: practical tech for the modern ophthalmologist,” the 12th Annual Complications and a “Reay of Hope” video session and more. Program co-chairs are Leon W. Herndon, MD and Nathan Radcliffe, MD.
• Young Eye Surgeons (YES) Skills Labs: The Phaco Lab will provide a review of basic and advanced phaco practices and procedures, including phaco settings and fluidics, incisions, capsulorhexis, phacoemulsification, cortex removal, nuclear disassembly, chopping, flipping and anterior vitrectomy. The Anterior Segment Surgery Lab will explore various procedures, including minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, the Yamane technique, nuclear disassembly, pupil expansion and CTR insertion. In the DMEK/DSAEK Lab, attendees will practice tissue insertion for DSAEK and positioning of the donor tissue. For DMEK, attendees will practice the DMEK technique for implantation and positioning of the donor cornea tissue through use of an artificial anterior chamber and preloaded corneal tissue.
Saturday, April 23
• Opening general session. The general sessions will begin at 10 a.m., with comments by ASCRS Program Chair Edward J. Holland, MD, and incoming ASCRS President Douglas Rhee, MD.
Other presentations will include “The U.S. Political Landscape: ’22 and Beyond,” by Chris Wallace, seasoned journalist, presidential debate moderator and CNN+ anchor; the presentation of the inaugural ASCRS Educator Award to Mitchell Weikert, MD; the presentation of the Chang-Crandall Humanitarian Award to Roger Ohanesian, MD; the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame Ceremony, inducting George Spaeth, MD, and Roger Steinert, MD (1950–2017); and the ASCRS Binkhorst Lecture by Rosa Braga-Mele, MD.
Sunday, April 24
• Sunday General Session. Beginning at 10 a.m., the symposium includes the inaugural Lindstrom Symposium lecture, named to recognize the contributions made by Richard L. Lindstrom, MD. Edward J. Holland, MD, will moderate the symposium, which will feature a group of panelists who will present topics on cataract, refractive, cornea and glaucoma surgery, and industry collaboration.
Additionally, Warren Hill, MD, will be honored with the Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, Lecture and Medal.
Monday, April 25
• Innovators General Session. Beginning at 10 a.m., this session will feature presentations on some of the most intriguing and ground-breaking innovations in ophthalmology followed by discussion and debate by a panel of experts, led by moderator Edward J. Holland, MD. Additionally, Francis Price Jr., MD, will deliver the Charles D. Kelman, MD, Innovator’s Lecture during the Innovators General Session. This lecture honors the work of individuals whose creativity has benefited ophthalmologists and their patients.
Tuesday, April 26
• The Best of ASCRS 2022 General Session. This wrap-up session will highlight some of the most important and interesting papers presented at the meeting from among the “Best Paper of Session” winners and will be followed by a panel discussion.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
Eyecelerator@ASCRS will take place Thursday, April 21. The Winning Pitch Challenge, which used to be a feature within the ASCRS Annual Meeting program, is now part of Eyecelerator and is accepting submissions from physician entrepreneurs.
A satellite CME program — Ophthalmology Quicksand Chronicles — will take place on April 22, from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will explore the unexpected, often vulnerable, surgical experiences or “quicksand moments” that anterior segment surgeons may encounter on any given day.
The ASCRS Foundation Party for a Purpose will be held on Friday, April 22 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Renaissance Washington, D.C. Downtown Hotel. Proceeds from this event will support the ASCRS Foundation’s humanitarian eye-care and physician education programs at home and around the world.
Skills Transfer Labs will take place on Saturday, April 23, Sunday, April 24 and Monday, April 25, covering a range of topics on cataract, cornea and glaucoma. A physician learning lab on retina is also scheduled for Saturday, April 23. A separate registration and additional fee is required for all labs.
The 40th ASCRS Film Festival will be held on Monday, April 25, at 5:15 p.m. Winners will be announced during a reception and awards ceremony honoring the best filmmakers and film producers in ophthalmology.
The ASCRS Tap Room will return, providing a space for show attendees and industry partners for networking, socializing and non-CME learning opportunities.
