The annual AAO meeting has moved online this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Taking place Nov. 13-15, the virtual meeting will feature interactive sessions, panel discussions and lectures. Daily opening sessions will be held from 7–7:30 a.m. PST during the meeting. Content will be broadcasted and archived during the meeting to view online later for attendees who cannot be at a live session.
A brief list of highlights for each day are below:
FRIDAY, NOV. 13
- Subspecialty day will be held from 7:40–11:30 a.m., and 12:30–4:20 p.m. There will be meetings for glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, refractive surgery, uveitis, cornea, ocular oncology and pathology, oculofacial plastic surgery and retina. Portions of each meeting will be live broadcasted on Nov. 13, with additional content available on demand.
- Academy leadership will speak, including Drs. Maria M. Aaron, Anne L. Coleman and David W. Parke II. There will also be a welcome for the 2020 guests of honor and the Straatsma award winner, R. Michael Siatkowski, MD.
SATURDAY, NOV. 14
- The Jackson Memorial Lecture will be presented by Michael X. Repka, MD, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Repka’s talk is entitled “Amblyopia Outcomes through Clinical Trials and Practice Measurement: Room for Improvement.”
SUNDAY, NOV. 15
- The AAO’s annual business meeting will be held from 9:20–9:40 a.m. PST. Reports will be conducted on the state of the organization that elects fellows and members.
- The meeting’s closing session, “Malcolm Gladwell, in Conversation with Stephen McLeod, MD,” will occur from 3–3:45 p.m. PST. Mr. Gladwell is a journalist, best-selling author and cultural observer. Dr. McLeod is chair of the department of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco, and editor-in-chief for Ophthalmology, the AAO’s official journal.
Nov. 14-15 will also feature live broadcasts of educational programs. These broadcasts include: courses in topics such as cataract, vision rehabilitation, practice quality and coding and reimbursement; Skills Transfer courses that educate on new diagnostic and surgical techniques; Original Paper sessions, where a panel will discuss and select the best paper on a topic; and a broadcast of e-posters, which will highlight research, case studies or instrument reports.
The AAO will offer a Virtual Meeting Guide website in October; the guide will work on any mobile device, tablet, laptop or computer. It will allow users to find session, events, exhibitors and meeting information, download course handouts and view videos and e-posters.
