With the lack of in-person industry meetings and visits from vendor reps in 2020, many companies have increased their online efforts to educate and inform today’s ophthalmologists. That’s why we’re introducing the Virtual Education Center, a special section dedicated to helping highlight some of these endeavors.
The publisher of Ophthalmology Management invited advertisers to provide summaries and previews of their recent and upcoming presentations, webinars, white papers, videos and more. Follow the links below to access these resources, which we hope will provide you with a variety of insights, research and data to help improve your patient outcomes and your practices.

IMPRIMISRX
This white paper serves as a primer for surgeons on compounding pharmacies and compounded medications. Under the 2013 Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA), enacted to improve drug supply chain security and to give the FDA more regulatory authority, two types of compounding pharmacies were established — 503A and 503B. Lee H. Rosebush, JD, chairman of the Outsourcing Facilities Association (OFA), explains the differences in the designations, including intended use of medication, regulatory bodies and standards, reporting and inspection.
William Wiley, MD, discusses the important role that compounded medications play in ophthalmology, including compliance benefits, patient convenience and cost savings. Dr. Wiley addresses frequently asked questions about the quality and legality of compounded pharmaceuticals and provides 10 questions that clinicians should ask when choosing a compounding pharmacy. Registration as an FDA-registered 503B outsourcing facility, such as ImprimisRx, is shown to be a clear indication of high-quality manufacturing standards and federal oversight for compounded medications. Please follow the link below to read the white paper in its entirety.

QUANTEL
Consider selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) first for glaucoma patients: SLT therapy is non-destructive laser therapy that can be used as a primary treatment option and can be used in combination with drug therapy or as an alternative therapy when drugs fail. SLT has a very short pulse duration (4 ns), which is shorter than the thermal relaxation time of melanin, allowing for selective photothermolysis. Because SLT selectively targets the pigmented trabecular meshwork (TM) cells and has an energy level 1% of argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT), it is a gentler laser than ALT with no histologic scarring or coagulative damage to the TM. It thus reduces collateral damage to surrounding tissues and makes repeat treatments possible. To learn more, visit the link below.
