For the first time in 10 years, the AAO’s annual meeting will take place in San Francisco. The 2019 meeting, at the city’s Moscone Center, will run from Oct. 12-15. Ophthalmologists who attend the meeting will be treated to more than 350 instruction courses, 50 symposia and original papers and posters.
Program highlights include the Opening Session and Annual Business Meeting, which kicks off Sunday, Oct. 13 at 8:30 a.m. at West Level 3. It will feature the following:
Edward Jackson Memorial Lecture:
Emily Y. Chew, MD.
Dr. Chew’s lecture is titled “Age-related Macular Degeneration: Nutrition, Genes and Deep Learning.” It will focus on her clinical and research interests in diabetic eye disease and age-related eye diseases.
Dr. Chew is the director of the division of epidemiology and clinical applications, and the deputy clinical director at the National Eye Institute and National Institutes of Health. Also, Dr. Chew is the study chair for the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2, or AREDS2, investigating the use of lutein/zeaxanthin and/or omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as treatment for AMD and cataracts.
Laureate Award:
Marilyn T. Miller, MD
Dr. Miller is a professor of ophthalmology and has practiced at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary at the University of Illinois, Chicago, since 1965. She has dedicated herself to preventing blindness and visual impairment in underserved regions in Africa, Asia and Central and South America. Of her many recognitions for her contributions to international service in ophthalmology, she is one of 75 recipients (and three women) to receive the Howe Medal by the American Ophthalmological Society, which denotes distinguished service to ophthalmology. Dr. Miller is the first female president of both the American Ophthalmological Society and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.
