The AAO returns to New Orleans for AAO 2017, a city that the convention has descended upon numerous times in the past.

This year’s theme is NEW, and “emphasizes the novel, late-breaking, cutting-edge courses, events and ideas” that meeting attendees will find, says Maria M. Aaron, MD, secretary for the Academy’s annual meeting.

New highlights this year include more Saturday programming, 111 new sessions, a new poster theater and the “EyePlay Experience.” According to the AAO, this lounge features: displays on the latest virtual and augmented reality uses for ophthalmology; a beer garden; a station to learn how to make New Orleans-style pralines, and a booth to help make toiletry bags for the homeless.

Highlights from opening session, on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 8:30 a.m. include the following:

• Laureate Award recipient, Irene H. Maumenee, MD
  Dr. Maumenee, University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago, helped introduce formal genetic concepts to eye care, creating the ophthalmic genetics subspecialty in the United States. She also helped found and lead the Johns Hopkins Center for Hereditary Eye Diseases, and cofounded the International Society for Genetic Eye Diseases and Retinoblastoma. Among her other accomplishments: diagnosis and management of ocular complications of Marfan syndrome; helping identify the gene for achromatopsia type 3 in the Pingelapese people of Micronesia, and gene identification for congenital cataracts and early onset retinal diseases.
• Jackson Memorial Lecture, Daniel F. Martin, MD
  Dr. Martin is chair, Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, chair of the Barbara and A. Malachi Mixon III Institute in ophthalmology. He also serves as study chair for the Comparison of AMD Treatments Trials (CATT) and the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCR). His lecture is titled “Intravitreal Therapy for Retinal Diseases: From CMV to CNV.”
• Keynote – Michael F. Marmor Lecture in Ophthalmology and the Arts, Henry Butler
  Mr. Butler, a musician and New Orleans native, has been blind since birth due to glaucoma. He has been playing the piano since age six, and has been composing and performing since age 12. Mr. Butler has performed and taught throughout the country, and his style draws from jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B music. His lecture is titled “One Man’s Vision.”
