Special AAO Preview Las Vegas 2015
AAO members to be honored
Award winners range from industry contributors to humanitarians.
By Robert Stoneback, Associate Editor
The American Academy of Ophthalmology will meet in Las Vegas for its annual gathering — 2015 marks the 119th time — and, as always, will honor the achievements of outstanding members at its awards program. Among the honorees are:
BRUCE E. SPIVEY, MD – LAUREATE RECOGNITION AWARD
Bruce E. Spivey, MD
The Laureate Recognition Award is the Academy’s highest honor. Its recipient is someone who makes “exceptional scientific contributions toward preventing blindness and restoring sight worldwide,” according to the AAO.
Dr. Spivey, the Academy says, “has made an immeasurable contribution to the betterment of eye care, the preservation and restoration of sight, and the prevention of blindness throughout the world,” through his work with groups like the AAO and International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO).
Dr. Spivey served as the AAO’s first executive vice president and CEO from 1978 to 1992. He spent 16 years as a department chair, 16 years as a hospital CEO and was CEO of a multihospital system for 14 years. He has also served as president of numerous boards and committees, including the ICO.
STEPHEN L. BEATTY, MD, & GARY E. FISH, MD – OUTSTANDING HUMANITARIAN SERVICE AWARDS
Stephen L. Beatty, MD
Gary E. Fish, MD
Dr. Beatty was nominated by the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology and West Georgia Eye Care Center.
The AAO notes Dr. Beatty’s “commitment to caring for underprivileged patients spans four continents”, with his primary focus on Africa. From 1987 to 1999, he participated in 11 medical mission trips.
Dr. Beatty has done extensive work in Zimbabwe, including serving as a provincial medical officer from 2000 to 2004, improving eye-care education, performing eye exams on thousands of patients in the country’s rural and remote parts and collecting donations to fund additional eye-care programs. He continues to travel there to treat rural villagers.
Dr. Fish was nominated by the Macula Society. He has treated patients at the Siloe Eye Clinic in Petit-Goave, Haiti, for the last 30 years.
Dr. Fish, his son — a retina colleague working at Dr. Fish’s practice — and Dr. Fish’s office study coordinator were in Haiti in 2010 when an earthquake devastated the island. The eye clinic collapsed, trapping volunteers inside, with Dr. Fish sustaining a fractured sternum and other injuries. His study coordinator was trapped under rubble and later died en route to a hospital.
Dr. Fish continues to treat the people of Haiti since the earthquake. He has also participated in medical missions to Latin America.
JEAN RAMSEY, MD – OUTSTANDING ADVOCATE AWARD
Jean Ramsey, MD
Dr. Ramsey was nominated by the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and Women in Ophthalmology.
An advocate on behalf of children via the AAO and other groups, Dr. Ramsey “was integral in developing, advocating for, and implementing a vision screening bill” for Massachusetts, according to the Academy. The bill still serves as a model for other states working to ensure optimal child eye care.
Along with The Vision Council of America, Dr. Ramsey helped write a bill to fund pediatric vision-screening activities in the United States and has raised awareness of pediatric vision care through speaking engagements.
She serves a leadership role in the National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health.
