Avellino-GENE Detection System Test
■ Avellino Lab’s genetic test for Avellino corneal dystrophy (ACD) identifies the ACD gene mutation. ACD develops slowly and causes cloudiness in the center of the cornea and can lead to vision loss. Carriers of the rare gene are at risk of developing ACD should they undergo vision correction surgery such as LASIK, LASEK or PRK, according to the company. While there is no treatment for ACD, the test is designed to help patients make informed decisions about undergoing these procedures.
