MEDFLOW CATARACT AND REFRACTIVE LENS OUTCOME ANALYSIS SYSTEM
■ Medflow has partnered with Zubisoft to provide cataract and refractive lens outcome analysis to Zubisoft’s Internet Based Refractive Analysis System (IBRA). The IBRA uses statistical software tools to analyze, compare, improve and predict refractive and visual outcomes after cataract surgery. Using IBRA, surgeons can compare outcomes and patient data with colleagues anywhere. The inclusion of IBRA won’t change Medflow’s work-flow process. The IBRA tool batches all data captured during the exam to allow for easy export.

LENSTEC SOFTEC HD OVAL IOL
■ The Softec HD Oval IOL by Lenstec Inc. is now available. The IOL was approved in June as the first oval, one-piece, foldable IOL for treating cataract. Its large optic is designed to counteract dysphotopsia. Its oval center measures 5.75 × 6.5 mm and it provides 30% more coverage across the visual plane than standard IOLs, according to the company. This helps prevent inadequate coverage that could lead to unwanted shadows or peripheral reflections. The company says the Softec HD Oval is the largest single-piece foldable IOL available.

IRIDEX TXCELL SCANNING LASER DELIVERY SYSTEM
■ Iridex received FDA 510(k) clearance for its TxCell Scanning Laser Delivery System, the company announced. With this system, users can deliver the laser in a multi-spot scanning mode, a more efficient method than the traditional singlespot mode, the company says. The system, when combined with an Iridex IQ 532 or IQ 577 laser enabled with MicroPulse, provides physicians with three laser modalities: multi-spot scanning, single-spot standard and MicroPulse therapy. All are designed to save time in a variety of laser photocoagulation procedures.

GULDEN OPHTHALMICS ILLUMINATED EYE CARD
■ Gulden Ophthalmics bills its new Illuminated Eye Card as a versatile, highly utilitarian examination tool. The LED illumination has two light level settings, making it useful in exam rooms, patient rooms, clinics or other settings under either normal ambient or darkened lighting. The unit holds two cards with letters on one side and, on the other, numbers calibrated for use at 30 cm. Bright, highly visible charts help enhance test accuracy. The unit comes with a 120-V power adapter and rechargeable lithium battery.

VOLK PAN RETINAL LASER LENS WITH CONTACT FLANGE
■ A new-flanged contact element is the key feature of Volk Optical’s redesigned H-R Wide Field panretinal lens. This new contact lens prevents patients from squeezing the lens off the eye during diagnostic or laser work. The lens provides 0.50 × magnification, with 2.0 × laser spot magnification. It offers clear visualization of retinal tears or lesions and provides a panretinal view not possible with a non-contact slit lamp lens. Users can also obtain a view of the entire retina that mirrored lenses do not provide.

MGMA-SULLIVAN-LUALLIN GROUP PATIENT SATISFACTION BENCHMARKING TOOL
■ The Medical Group Management Association in a partnership with SullivanLuallin Group Inc., a healthcare consultancy, released a new Web-based tool designed to help practices formulate patient satisfaction and identify opportunities for improvement. The tool compares the percentage of excellent responses on patient survey forms with corresponding SullivanLuallin Group survey questions using a graphic interface. The partners say they hope this is the beginning of a patient-satisfaction benchmarking process. There is also a membership benefit. MGMA-ACMPE members can compare their current patient survey scores with the CG-CAHPS survey and the scores of other medical groups across the nation.

ZIEMER LDV Z6 FEMTOSECOND LASER
■ When Ziemer received FDA approval for its trio of upgradable femtosecond laser platforms earlier this year, it made the first two models, the Z2 and the Z4, available. The third laser in the series, the Z6, will be issued in first half of 2013, according to company statements. The Z6 is considered the high-end model. It has the capabilities to implant intrastromal corneal rings, treat keratoconus and create intrastromal pockets to house presbyopia-correcting devices, create oval or circular flaps and customize edge configuration. The Z4 can do all that, but the Z6 adds the ability for the advanced corneal surgeon to perform penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty procedures as well. The upgradable platform means owners of the Z2 and Z4 models will not need to purchase a new platform to obtain the X6.

ACCUTOME FEMTOSECOND LASER SURGICAL TOOLS
■ Accutome has unveiled three new surgical devices designed to aid in creating precise subservice incisions to the eye during femtosecond laserassisted cataract surgery. The instruments, the Eippert femtosecond spatula, the Solomon femtosecond chopper and the LRI enhancement forceps, are each designed for specific uses. The Eippert spatula employs double-ended sizing to help users open primary and secondary incisions created by lasers. The spatula uses blunt, thin tips to maintain proper wound architecture. The footballshaped tip of the Solomon femtosecond chopper is designed specifically to chop femtosecond-fragmented nuclei. The LRI enhancement forceps have a 500-μm gauge to correct incision depth and spread accurate incisions during or after surgery.

MACPRACTICE PATIENT CHECK-IN APP
■ Medical software developer MacPractice has released a new checkin app, called Check-In, for the Apple iPad and iPad mini. The app is fully integrated with other MacPractice practice management software, including MacPractice MD and its eye-care specific app, MacPractice 20/20. Check-In automates and streamlines patient check-in procedures. It can also help offices achieve HIPAA compliance by replacing the manual sign-in sheet. Instead, patients enter identifying information directly into the iPad, which automatically records arrival time, updates appointment status and alerts clinicians to the patient’s arrival.
MacPractice also offers its Clipboard App to help expedite patient processing. Patients use Clipboard to register, provide intake information and medical and social history, sign release forms and even take their own photo. Patients can review a summary of their information and just tap a button to automatically send all it to the office’s MacPractice software.
