IRIDEX TXCELL SCANNING LASER DELIVERY SYSTEM
■ Iridex has added a new laser delivery system to its line of therapeutic MicroPulse lasers. Iridex describes MicroPulse as fovea friendly and tissue sparing. The new TxCell scanning laser delivery system adds multi-spot pattern scanning technology when coupled with the Iridex IQ 532 green or IQ 577 yellow lasers. This new multi-spot scanning system is designed to reduce times in a variety of laser photocoagulation procedures and to operate more efficiently than traditional single-spot mode.

CARL ZEISS AXIO SCAN.Z1 DIGITAL SLIDE SCANNER
■ The Axio Scan.Z1 slide scanner from Carl Zeiss AG is an automated microscope system designed to allow researchers to digitize the fixed-tissue sections and cytologic specimens in bright field and fluorescence. The self-calibrating scanner captures the entire specimen area of a slide, including the edge. In a few minutes, it presents images on virtual slides. The scanner has the capability to image up to 100 slides at once. To protect the sample, the scanner uses a Colibri.2 UV-free LED light source and a ring aperture contrast, a focus finder with oblique illumination. The device operates on Carl Zeiss ZEN imaging software, which allows users to work with pre-defined recording parameters automatically or select settings individually. Virtual slides are uploaded to the ZEN browser, a Web-based database. Users can access, view and share images online and use an iPhone or iPad app to access the ZEN browser.

BIO-TISSUE AMNIOGRAFT AG-5050
■ The new AG-5050 is a larger version of Bio-Tissue’s AmnioGraft. Like the original, it is a biologic ocular transplantation graft comprised of amniotic membrane for treatment of Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis. More than half of patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome experience eye problems ranging from mild dry eye to severe scarring. AmnioGraft delivers a unique wound-repair amniotic membrane, reducing inflammation and the formation of abnormal blood vessels. The AG-5050 is 5 cm × 5 cm and is designed to expand ocular surface coverage. “When patients are treated early, cryopreserved amniotic membrane works very well in the acute treatment of the eye for these diseases, as it has therapeutic qualities that help the eye surface heal faster,” says lead researcher Scheffer C.G. Tseng, MD, PhD.

OCULUS CORVIS ST
■ The Corvis ST is the first non-contact tonometer combined with an optical pachymeter. In a study, the Corvis ST showed high precision in measuring IOP compared with the Goldmann applanation tonometer. Its measurement principle employs the reaction of the cornea to an air pulse a Scheimpflug camera then visualizes. This allows an accurate determination of the exact time of the first applanation compared with conventional non-contact tonometers, the company says. Corvis ST received FDA approval for tonometry and pachymetry, but not biomechanical response.
