VICTUS FEMTOSECOND LASER PLATFORM
■ Bausch + Lomb, in a partnership with Technolas Perfect Vision (TPV) have received 510(k) FDA clearance on what the companies are calling the first single-platform femtosecond laser designed for cataract and corneal surgery. The laser, called VICTUS, is designed for laser refractive cataract surgery that may help surgeons create more precise and controllable capsulotomies. The device is also cleared for creation of a corneal flap for LASIK or other procedures requiring initial lamellar resection of the cornea and anterior capsulotomy during cataract surgery.
VICTUS has been used in more than 2,000 surgeries in Europe since 2011 when it received CE clearance.
“Since signing a definitive agreement with an option to purchase TPV last September, the two organizations have made substantial technical and commercial progress in the field of advanced refractive and cataract technologies,” said John Barr, executive vice president and president of global surgical business for Bausch + Lomb.

CORCORAN COMPLIANCE CONNECTION
■ In an effort to make EMR requirements less of a chore, Suzanne and Kevin Corcoran, owners of the Corcoran Consulting Group, are launching Corcoran Compliance Connection, a new company to provide ophthalmic reimbursement software. The program relies on the chart-documentation in the EMR as the basis for accurate real-time coding recommendations.
“There is an enormous unmet need for a trustworthy and reliable expert coding and compliance system to support physicians,” says Mr. Corcoran, adding that he expects Corcoran Compliance Connection to fill that need.
For doctors who are used to working on paper but are ready to switch to EMR, they may expect a product to have some intelligence built into it. Although all EMR software claims to code for you, Mr. Corcoran says that, in his experience as an auditor testing these programs, none have really passed muster. His program, he says, offers coding suggestions based data entered.
“It provides doctors with answers they might not have gotten themselves, while keeping them out of trouble,” Corcoran says.
The proprietary web-based application interacts with a physician's electronic medical record to provide coding for eye exams based solely on EMR entries in a secure, HIPAA compliant environment.
