ENVISTA IOL
■ The FDA has approved Bausch + Lomb's enVista hydrophobic acrylic IOL. The lens is unique in that it's the first to show no signs of glistening of any grade, the company says.
Glistenings, or fluid-filled microvacules that form within an IOL, may compromise visual acuity or contrast sensitivity.
“Our customers tell us how frustrating glistenings can be when conducting post-surgical examinations of their patients,” said Bauch + Lomb's executive vice president and medical officer Cal Roberts, MD, in a statement.
The enVista, which also features a combination of aspheric, aberration-free Advanced Optics technology, is designed to minimize posterior capsular opacification. The goal is to avoid post-surgical vision clouding.

PSF REFRACTOR VOICE-GUIDED SOFTWARE
■ Vmax Vision has added voice-guided instruction software to its point spread function refractor. The software audibly guides students through refraction tests, reducing refraction-training time.
The voice-guided operation is initiated by an operator with the push of a button and can be repeated as necessary.
Shui Lai, PhD, says the voice instruction will decrease the learning curve from about two weeks down to two or three days. Lai is the founder and CEO of Vmax Vision.

Volk's HRX lenses offer a 150° field of view with a .43x image magnification.
The lenses are also available with either a standard contact option of Volk's self-stabilizing vitrectomy design, the latter of which eliminates the need for suture or stabilizing rings.

ASICO AKAHOSHI ELECTRONIC TORIC MARKER
■ Toric IOLs correct preexisting corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery, but they require the surgeon to mark the axis on which the toric IOL should be implanted. For that reason, ASICO is offering the toric marker, designed by Takayuki Akahoshi, MD. The marker uses orange, green and red light-emitting diodes as well as a beeping sound to help the surgeon ensure level implantation.
The device has a flat handle to be held between the thumb and index finger. It is attached to the body of the marker by a magnet and can easily be removed for sterilization. Two models are available. One completes markings in one step and the other, designed for patients with narrow eyelids or deepset eyes, requires two. The head on both designs may be used for all types of eyes, including those with small orbits.
