SPECIAL ASCRS MEETING PREVIEW SECTION
ASCRS Set for San Diego Meeting
Drs. Lindstrom, Vasavada to deliver key lectures.
By Jerry Helzner, Senior Editor
Having chosen to meet in the city the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons calls its “favorite Symposium and Congress venue,” attendees can look forward to both an instructive and relaxing interlude from workplace routines when they gather in San Diego from March 25 to 30. The event, which will be based at the San Diego Convention Center on San Diego Bay, with some sessions held at the nearby San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina, also includes the annual meeting of the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators.
Among a wide array of compelling presentations, including lectures, seminars, Ophthalmology Hall of Fame inductions, a film competition and Techs and Nurses programs, two meeting highlights are sure to be the prestigious Binkhorst and Charles S. Kelman Innovators' lectures.
The Binkhorst Lecture will be delivered at the opening general session on Saturday, March 26, by Abhay R. Vasavada, MD, FRCS, a world-renowned expert on cataract surgery who has served as the long-time Medical and Research Director of the Raghudeep Eye Clinic in India and is the driving force behind the facility's ever-growing reputation for pioneering vision-related research.
Dr. Vasavada's lecture is titled “Pediatric Cataract: The Compelling Quest.” It will deal with problems associated with pediatric cataracts and will focus on challenges in managing the disease. Dr. Vasavada will also present strategies for achieving optimum outcomes in these eyes. The results of a randomized clinical trial of aphakia versus pseudophakia in pediatric eyes will be reported.

On Monday, March 28, at 10 a.m., Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, of Minnesota Eye Consultants and a recognized thought leader in ophthalmology, will deliver the Kelman Innovators' Lecture.
Dr. Lindstrom's presentation will be titled “Thoughts on the Ophthalmologist's Role in Education and Innovation.” The lecture will review the problems and needs in the preservation, restoration and enhancement of vision for the individual and society as a whole; working with others, including industry and government, to find solutions to those needs and problems; peer-to-peer dissemination of the knowledge acquired through practice experience and innovation; and delivering quality care in a compassionate and cost-effective manner.

2011 Hall of Fame Inductees
An annual highlight of the ASCRS meeting is the induction of new members of the Ophthalmology Hall of Fame. This year, those honors go to two distinguished ophthalmologists, one still very active and one from the past.
The first is Alfred Sommer, MD, MHS, of Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Sommer, who continues to work full time at the institution, is Dean Emeritus of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and University Distinguished Service Professor.
More specifically, Dr. Sommer is a Professor of Epidemiology and International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He served as Dean of the Bloomberg School from 1990-2005.
Dr. Sommer received his MD from Harvard Medical School (1967) and his Master of Health Science in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health (1973).
His research interests include outcomes assessment; blindness prevention strategies; child survival; and the growing interface between medicine and public health.
Dr. Sommer has published five books and more than 300 scientific articles and has chaired scientific and advisory committees of the National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Micronutrient Forum, the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the World Economic Forum.
The other inductee is Frederick Herman Verhoeff (1874-1968), an American ophthalmologist. Dr. Verhoeff was an ophthalmic surgeon and pathologist at a Boston eye and ear infirmary and had a parallel career as a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. He introduced Verhoeff's stain in 1908. This is a stain containing hema-toxylin, ferric chloride and iodine that is used to demonstrate the presence of elastin.
Cornea Day and Glaucoma Day
Two events that will be held early in the ASCRS meeting are Cornea Day and Glaucoma Day, which will both take place on Friday, March 25.
Cornea Day, sponsored by the ASCRS Cornea Clinical Committee and the Cornea Society, is a unique one-day symposium providing an excellent overview of corneal transplantation, corneal issues in cataract and refractive surgery, infectious and inflammatory disease, as well as innovations in medical and surgical cornea. The dynamic program features lectures, debates, panel discussions, and surgical video reviews from a well-known faculty. Separate registration is required; the hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
ASCRS Glaucoma Day 2011 is scheduled to feature critical updates, robust debates and interactive case studies on what comprehensive ophthalmologists and anterior segment surgeons need to know about glaucoma management. Separate registration required. It is a full day program, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
The Flower Fields Ranunculus Display comes into bloom at Carlsbad Ranch.
Saturday Symposia
The program on Saturday, March 26, is highlighted by several interesting symposia, These include:
Ocular Trauma for the “Non-Trauma” Surgeon. Representatives of civilian academic institutions and members of the US Armed Forces will present a joint session on managing ocular trauma, especially for the non-oculoplastics-trained surgeon.
Ocular trauma occurs in a variety of work, athletic and accident settings as well as in training and combat activities. With an emphasis on pearls that you can integrate into your practice even (or especially) if you see just a few open globes a year, the symposium will discuss the current techniques and thought processes related to simple management of ocular injuries. 1:00-2:30 pm.
Managing Refractive Issues in Glaucoma Patients/Improving Refractive Outcomes in Glaucoma Patients. Sponsored by the ASCRS Glaucoma Clinical Committee and the American Glaucoma Society, this symposium will highlight the surgical strategies for managing difficult refractive issues in glaucoma patients through presentations, surgical video and discussion. Topics include: Effect of Glaucoma on Visual Function, Update on Multifocal, Accommodating and Presbyopia-Correcting IOLs in Glaucoma Patients, Correcting Astigmatism in Glaucoma, Toric IOLs and LRIs, Intraocular Lens Exchange in Glaucoma and Small Pupil Management. 1:00-2:30 pm.
Retina Update 2011: Sponsored by the ASCRS Retina Clinical Committee.
Topics include: Diabetic Macular Edema, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Cataract and AMD, Retinal Vascular Occlusion and discussion. 3:00-4:30 pm.
Issues in Presbyopia Correction with Cataract Surgery. Jointly sponsored by the Japanese Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and ASCRS, the symposium will examine several key issues in optimizing presbyopia correction with intraocular lens surgery, including monovision, multifocal IOLs and accommodating IOLs. Topics will include patient selection, neuroadaption and neural training, new IOL designs, and the possible future role of femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in visual outcomes and development of new lens designs. 3:00-4:30 pm.
Away from the Meeting Site
For those attendees and/or spouses who can find the time to get away from the meeting sites for awhile to explore the attractions that San Diego has to offer, the world-famous San Diego Zoo is at the top of many “must-see” lists. New features include the Polar Bear Plunge, which affords guests the opportunity to come within feet of active polar bears. This exhibit also includes a mock polar bear snow den, an Arctic research helicopter, and a presentation of the threats facing polar bears due to climate change.
In addition, the San Diego Zoo is one of the few zoos in the United States to still retain an elephant population, which are part of the Elephant Odyssey exhibit. Another rare treat are the three giant pandas (mother, father and cub) that are housed at the San Diego Zoo.
If the Zoo itself isn't enough to satisfy your taste for animal watching, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, located about 30 miles northwest of center city, is an 1,800-acre preserve where wild animals roam free over vast expanses. The Journey Into Africa exhibit allows visitors to ride an open-air tram and view rhinos, Cape buffalo, gazelles and a variety of native African birds.
Other attractions include Seaworld, located on Mission Bay, the SeaLife Aquarium at Legoland, and Balboa Park, the largest urban cultural park in the United States. Balboa Park offers a large concentration of cultural institutions, including 15 museums, eight gardens, art galleries and a performing arts center. The complete list of Balboa Park attractions can be accessed at www.balboapark.org.
One seasonal attraction that is at its height in late March is the Flower Fields Ranunculus Display, which features 50 acres of beautiful Tecolote Giant Ranunculus flowers that come into bloom each spring at the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. For more information, go to www.theflowerfields.com.
Great Food in the Sunshine
As if the climate and views of the bay are not enough, San Diego also offers a sure-to-please restaurant scene.
By René Luthe, Senior Associate Editor
You've spent hours in darkened rooms in the San Diego Convention Center, absorbing the latest scientific data from the greatest ophthalmic minds in the world, and almost as much time perusing the cutting-edge technology in the exhibit hall. Now that you've fed the mind, it's time to feed the body. And since you are in San Diego, that will be a pleasure to do, with plenty of good food often served up with a view of the beautiful bay. Here are some of the locals' picks for where to go to relax and enjoy. With a convention in town, it is especially important to make reservations.
Close to the Convention Center
Here's what you can find within walking distance:
De'Medici Ristorante Italiano
815 5th Avenue ∫ 619-702-7228
demedicisandiego.com ∫ Service: Dinner
A standout among San Diego's Italian restaurants, according to local ophthalmologist Perry Binder, MD. The stuffed sole alone is worth the trip, he says.
Donovan's Steak & Chop House
570 K Street ∫ 619-237-9700
donovanssteakhouse.com ∫ Service: Dinner
Located just one block north of the Convention Center, Donovan's is a standout among local steakhouses, says David Evans, PhD, of Vector Vision and the Ceatus Media Group, the latter of which is based in San Diego.
Greystone's
658 Fifth Avenue (at G Street) ∫ Phone: 619-232-0225
Greystonesteakhouse.com ∫ Service: Dinner
Greystone's offers aged meats, seafood and pasta dishes with influences from the US, Europe and the Pacific Rim.
Local favorite Lou & Mickey's is famous for its steaks. And it's also just a short walk from the convention center.
Lou & Mickey's
224 Fifth Avenue ∫ 619 237-4900
louandmickeys.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
Located in the Gaslamp district and across from the Convention Center, local favorite Lou & Mickey's offers both great steaks and great seafood, Dr. Evans says. “They have a bone-in filet mignon that is excellent.”
The Oceanaire Seafood Room
400 J Street ∫ Phone: 619-858-2277
Theoceanaire.com ∫ Service: Dinner
Located nearby in the Gaslamp district, Oceanaire offers an oyster bar and award-winning clam chowder.
Richard Walker's Pancake House
520 Front Street ∫ 619-231-7777
richardwalkers.com ∫ Service: Breakfast, Lunch
The best place for breakfast in San Diego, declares Didi Discar of Carling Communications. “They have German pancakes and apple pancakes to die for!” The only catch, she says, is that the restaurant does not accept reservations. On weekdays this probably won't be a problem, but on Saturdays, be prepared for lines extending around the corner.
Just a Short Cab Ride Away
According to sources, the following restaurants can be reached in a five- to 20-minute drive.
Azuki Sushi ∫ 2321 5th Avenue ∫ 619-238-4760
Azukisushi.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
This “modern Japanese and sushi lounge” is Dr. Binder's pick for best sushi in town. It is located about 20 blocks north of the convention center.
Bertrand at Mister A's
2550 Fifth Avenue, Twelfth Floor ∫ 619-239-1377
bertrandatmisteras.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
Mister A's was recommend by all three of Ophthalmology Management's sources. Located on top of a building that is situated along the landing path of the San Diego airport, so the planes come “incredibly close,” Ms. Discar says. “You'll get a great view of San Diego,” Dr. Evans says. “You can sit out on the deck and watch the planes come in.” In addition to the view, there's a fine-dining menu and a superb wine list, according to its fans.
Blue Point Coastal Cuisine
565 5th Avenue ∫ 619-233-6623
cohnrestaurants.com ∫ Service: Dinner
This Gaslamp district seafood restaurant is “always a winner,” according to Ms. Discar.
Cowboy Star
640 Tenth Avenue ∫ 619-450-5880
thecowboystar.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
Located in the East Village, Cowboy Star offers “contemporary cuisine with a western flare.” What differentiates it from other steak houses, Ms. Discar notes, is that the menu includes game as well as beef.
Coyote Café
2461 San Diego Avenue ∫ 619-291-HOWL (4695)
cafecoyoteoldtown.com
Service: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Another recommended Mexican restaurant in the Old Town district. “They make the tortillas right in front of you, and it's family-friendly too,” says Dr. Evans.
Cucina Urbana
505 Laurel Street ∫ 619-239-2222
cucinaurbana.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
“Funky nouveau Italian,” is how Ms. Discar describes Cucina Urbana. Deep-fried squash blossoms filled with cheese and flatbread pizzas are two much-praised menu offerings, and the restaurant features a wine bar as well.
Island Prime
880 Harbor Island Drive ∫ 619-298-6802
Cohnrestaurants.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
Conveniently located across from the San Diego airport is Island Prime, where the menu includes dishes such as truffle fries and Kobe beef burgers. Another famous offering, according to Ms. Discar, is the crab stack—crab meat, avocado, cilantro and tomatoes. “They stack it like a tower, then they break the stack right in front of you, so it becomes this big salad,” she raves. “You scoop it up with grilled focac-cia bread.”
Hotel Del Coronado
1500 Orange Avenue Coronado,CA
1 800 468 3533 ∫ Hoteldel.com
Built in 1888, this classic beachfront was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1977. Movie buffs know it as the place Some Like It Hot was filmed. Brunch in the Crown Room. The lawn opens right onto the beach, Dr. Evans says.
Humphrey's By the Bay
2241 Shelter Island Drive ∫ 619-224-3577
humphreysbythebay.com
Service: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Sunday Brunch
Another San Diego favorite with a great view.
Old Town Mexican Café
2489 San Diego Avenue
Phone: 619-297-4330 ∫ Oldtowncafe.com
Service: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Another gem in the Old Town district, Dr. Evans says.
Ra
474 Broadway ∫ 619-321-0021
Rasushi.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
“It's a hip place, a southern California scene with great sushi,” Ms. Discar says. In addition to the inventive rolls, Ra offers a popular happy hour.
Red Pearl Kitchen
440 J Street ∫ 619-231-110
redpearlkitchen.com
Service: Dinner
You'll find Asian-fusion style food in a hip setting, according to Ms. Discar. “The food is very tapas-like—you can share,” she says. “Plus it's got a great bar.”
Sushi Ota
4529 Mission Bay Drive ∫ 858-270-5670
sushiota.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
While San Diego is home to many good sushi restaurants, Dr. Evans says award-winning Sushi Ota is probably the best. Internet restaurant review sites show that he's not alone in his verdict.
Top of the Market
750 North Harbor Drive ∫ 619-232-3474
thefishmarket.com ∫ Service: Lunch, Dinner
Located in Seaport Village, Top of the Market actually offers two restaurants, Dr. Evans reports. On the ground floor is a more casual spot, with the fine dining upstairs. The food is so popular that reservations are a necessity even when there is not a convention in town, according to Dr. Evans.
World Famous
711 Pacific Beach Drive ∫ 858-272-3100
worldfamous.signonsandiego.com
Service: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
For those craving some beach-front dining, World Famous specializes in both seafood and hand-cut steaks. “They serve the best lobster bisque I've ever had, bar none,” declares Ms. Discar.
Farther Afield
The following restaurants require a drive to nearby La Jolla.
In addition to good food, Humphrey's offers a beautiful view of San Diego Bay.
Tapenade
7612 Fay Avenue ∫ La Jolla
858-551-7500 ∫ tapenaderestaurant.com
Service: Lunch, Dinner
Located in La Jolla, a suburb of San Diego, Tapenade requires an approximately 20-minute cab ride, but Dr. Evans says that it is well worth the trip. “It's the best French restaurant in southern California,” in his view, offering an outstanding wine list and a fusion of traditional Provencal gastronomy with organic ingredients.
George's
1250 Prospect Street ∫ La Jolla
858 454 4244 ∫ Georgesatthecove.com
Service: Lunch, Dinner
When it comes to ocean views, “You can't find a more beautiful setting anywhere in San Diego,” according to George's Web site—and Ms. Discar agrees. “It sits right above the La Jolla cove,” she explains. George's offers three dining experiences as further temptation: Ocean Terrace, with a casual bistro menu; George's Bar, also featuring casual, light fare; and California Modern, with its emphasis on “innovative, contemporary” fare.
Manhattan of La Jolla
7766 Fay Avenue ∫ La Jolla
858-459-0700 ∫ empress-hotel.com ∫ Service: Dinner
Located in the Empress Hotel, La Jolla offers northern Italian cuisine. On the weekends, plan on staying for the live jazz.
