DR. FIRST e-PRESCRIBING

■ Kowa Optimed and EMRlogic Systems recently announced the integration of DrFirst e-prescribing to activeEHR, Kowa's electronic medical record software. The new feature will allow physicians to safely submit prescriptions electronically to any retail or mail order pharmacy. The system will also allow users to view comprehensive clinical information for each patient, including drug allergies, prescription history and drug formulary checks.

EC-3 HYDROPHOBIC LENS

■ Aaren Scientific recently got FDA approval for its three-piece hydrophobic EC-3 IOL. 13 mm in diameter, the lens features a 6 mm biconvex optic with a square-edge design, a 360° sharp-edge barrier, and polyvindlidene fluoride haptics in a modified “C” design. Aaren says that the lens's material is designed to offer clarity without glistenings.

MACULAR PROTECT NUTRITIONAL FORMULATIONS

■ To support patients with AMD, ScienceBased Health launched two nutritional eye health formulations, based on information obtained from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS).

The MacularProtect Complete Drink Mix provides all the nutrients needed for both reducing AMD risk and full-body health. The formulation makes it unnecessary to take an additional multivitamin, meaning a decreased risk for over-consuming nutrients such as zinc.

MacularProtect Omega-3 Companion are twice-daily softgels comprised of 1,000 mg of fish oil. Meant to be taken in addition to the MacularProtect Complete, the formulation also includes 650 mg of EPA and 350 mg of DHA—the levels being studied in the ongoing AREDS 2 clinical trial by the National Eye Institute.
