SPECIAL ASCRS MEETING PREVIEW SECTION
Visitor-Friendly Boston to Host ASCRS
Modern Convention Center Awaits Attendees.
BY JERRY HELZNER, SENIOR EDITOR
After basically being under construction for 16 years thanks to the notorious “Big Dig” road-building project, Boston has recently emerged as an easily navigable visitor-friendly city that boasts one of the most modern convention centers in the country. That's good news for the thousands of ophthalmologists, practice administrators, exhibitors and spouses who are due to gather at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC) from April 9th to the 14th for the annual American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Meeting.
The BCEC, located in the South Boston Waterfront's Seaport District and convenient to 20,000 hotel rooms and major transportation systems, was completed in 2004. With its 516,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, the striking structure is longer than the Empire State Building is high. The BCEC also boasts 84 configurable meeting rooms, over 300,000 square feet of function space and a 40,000 square-foot ballroom. In addition, the new Westin Waterfront Hotel is located adjacent to the BCEC.
History, Culture and Shopping
Though ASCRS attendees will spend much of their time at the Convention Center, they can find many of Boston's historic and cultural attractions within easy reach of the meeting place, including Boston's famous “Freedom Trail” of historic colonial sites. The Waterfront area itself is quickly becoming a hub of Boston cultural activity, with the opening of the Institute of Contemporary Art, expansion of the Boston Children's Museum and ongoing music series at the Bank of America Pavilion.
For those who want to expand their activities, Newbury Street in Boston's upscale Back Bay area is home to a unique and diverse shopping experience, hosting a wide range of both branded retailers and locally owned boutiques. Also in the Back Bay are the Pru Center and Copley Place, two large shopping malls connected by a sky bridge.
Another major shopping area is the Fanueil Hall Marketplace, near the North End and close to the Waterfront, where visitors will find an appealing mix of both shopping and dining. Fanciers of antiques should gravitate to Charles Street, which is home to numerous antique shops and dealers.
COURTESY OF THE MASSACHUSETTS CONVENTION CENTER AUTHORITY
This year, ASCRS attendees will meet at the modern Boston Convention and Exhibition Center near the South Boston Waterfront.
Fabled Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, is a baseball mecca. Guided tours of the park are conducted daily.
The Back Bay is a visitor's delight that offers a great number of attractions in addition to shopping amenities. The Boston Skywalk Observatory provides sweeping views of the harbor, greater Boston and beyond. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children under 12. Boston Duck Tours have been described by many as a “can't miss” experience. The tours are conducted using a fleet of amphibious vehicles modeled after the World War II DUKW that participated in many beach landings, The modern-day Ducks take visitors through the streets of historic Boston and then splash into the Charles River for views of the Boston and Cambridge skylines. Tickets for the Duck Tours are $31 for adults and $21 for children. For more information on tour times and trip routes, please e-mail info@BostonDuckTours.com.
Also of interest is the university city of Cambridge, which is home to both Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Cambridge is just across the Charles River, a short bus or train ride from downtown Boston.
Sports Aplenty
For baseball fans a pilgrimage to the historic home of the Boston Red Sox, Fenway Park, is a must. Though the meeting dates closely correspond with the opening of the baseball season, the Red Sox will be on the road during the period April 9 to 14. This is a bit unfortunate because in the days just prior to the ASCRS meeting, the Red Sox will be at home taking on archrival New York Yankees in a three-game season-opening series. The good news is that even when the Sox are on the road, hourly walking tours of Fenway Park are offered to the public seven days a week at a cost of $12 for adults and $10 for children. For more information, call 617-226-6666 or e-mail tours@redsox.com.
Basketball fans will be able to catch the powerful Boston Celtics taking on the Washington Wizards on Friday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. and hosting the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, April 14 at 8pm in the last game of the regular season. Both games will be played at the TD North Arena on Causeway Street near the historic North End. Also at the TD North, hockey's Boston Bruins will play the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, April 10 at 1pm.
Another major attraction at TD North will take place on Sunday, April 11 at 4pm when ice skating stars — direct from the Winter Olympic Games — will appear at the “Stars on Ice” show.
Additional Attractions
For those who can find the time to take in other entertainment events, the famous Big Apple Circus will have two performances each day at Boston City Hall Plaza on April 9, 10 and 11. Tickets for the almost two-hour show range from $15 to $65 and can be purchased in advance by going to www.bigapplecircus.org.
The Boston Ballet will perform the light-hearted comedy Coppelia at the Opera House on April 8, 9, 10 and 11, with two performances on April 10. For all performance times and ticket prices go to www.bostonballet.org.
Author and satirist David Sedaris will appear at Symphony Hall at 7 p.m. on April 11. For more information, go to www.celebrityseries.org
Back at the Meeting Site
In addition to the main ASCRS meeting, the American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA) will hold its Congress on Ophthalmic Practice Management from April 9 through 13 and a Technicians and Nurses Program will take place from April 10-12. ASCRS Glaucoma Day will be held April 9 and World Cornea Congress VI will take place from April 7 to 9.
The prestigious annual Binkhorst Lecture will be given during the ASCRS Opening General Session, Saturday, April 10, in the BCEC Grand Ballroom. The Binkhorst Lecture, titled “Looking Back, Looking Ahead,” will be given by noted cataract surgeon I. Howard Fine, MD, of Eugene, Oregon.
Dr. Fine will review the origins of cataract surgery and how it became the miracle of 20th Century medicine. He doesn't stop with the here and now. Will femtosecond lasers supplant phaco? Will lenticular refractive surgery supplant laser-based corneal vision correction? And, how can ophthalmology conquer world-blindness to become the miracle of 21st Century medicine?
The 2010 Innovators Session on Monday, April 12, at 10 a.m., will feature Henry F. Edelhauser, PhD, presenting the Charles D. Kelman Innovator's Lecture, “Evolution of Surgical Pharmacology: Reviewing the Past and Looking to the Future.”
Boston's Restaurant Scene Embraces Old & New
Baked beans, chowder, barbecue, haute French cuisine - the city's restaurants offer something for everyone.
BY RENÉ LUTHE, SENIOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR
Once again, Ophthalmology Management has found the local epicures with the skinny on their city's restaurant scene. For your convenience, we've organized their selections by neighborhood — now let's dig in!
The Waterfront
Here are the eateries closest to the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center:
The Flour Bakery ∫ 12 Farnsworth St.
(617) 338-4333 ∫ www.flourbakery.com
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner (weeknights)
“A fun place that's more of a café and bakery,” says Bradford J. Shingleton, MD, of Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, who is also assistant clinical professor of ophthalmology at Harvard and clinical instructor at Tufts University. He says that the Flour is close to the convention center. If the homemade scones, banana bread and cinnamon cream brioche somehow fail to appeal to you, there's the diverse sandwich offerings, including curried tuna and roasted lamb with tomato chutney and goat cheese.
Legal Sea Foods - Legal Test Kitchen
225 Northern Ave. ∫ (617) 330-7430
www.legalseafoods.com ∫ Lunch, Dinner
The landmark restaurant is now a well-known chain, but still a top contender in Boston for excellent seafood, our sources tell us. This location in the Seaport District is within walking distance of the convention center; see the Web site for other Boston locations.
Meritage ∫ 70 Rowes Wharf ∫ (617) 439-3995
www.meritagetherestaurant.com ∫ Dinner
Located in the Boston Harbor Hotel, this one comes highly recommended by our sources. Large and small plates are offered for each item on the menu, matched with complementary wine flavors at this high-end French-style restaurant. Not least among its attractions is a stunning view of the waterfront.

The Union Oyster House is the oldest restaurant in continuous service in the United States.
Mistral ∫ 223 Columbus Ave. ∫ (617) 867-9300

The thin-crust pizzas from their grill are especially popular. “It's glitzy everybody goes there to see and be seen,” says Ms. Reilly.

In addition to burgers, the menu includes entrees such as Simmered Whitewater Mussels with Garlic, Shallots, Smoked Tomatoes and Fresh Thyme, Served with Grilled Baguette.
