Staff personnel costs remain the highest expense item for almost all ophthalmology practices, often constituting more than 50% of total practice overhead. Practices pay from 22% to 27% of their gross collected revenue for such staff personnel costs. The 2008 Staff Salary Survey, recently published by The Health Care Group, located in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., collects and provides "hard" data to compare and structure your staff's compensation and benefits.

Below are the national staff salary averages for ophthalmology practices as reported in the 2008 Staff Salary Survey. Salaries for information technician/management and scribe positions have been added for 2008.

Note that staff averages are given on a per-hour basis while the administrator/executive director, assistant manager, business manager and office manager averages are given on an annual salary basis. OM
