Premium IOLs in Practice
INTRODUCTION BY R ACHEL RENSHAW, EXECUTIVE EDITOR
In this issue, we present several articles discussing IOL technology. At the forefront of this discussion are the “premium” IOLs that are designed to correct the effects of presbyopia through either accommodating or multifocal technology. When planning this issue, we decided that it would be best to hear from physicians on their personal experience with these lenses, in terms of patient selection, preoperative calculations, patient counseling, pearls for implantation and postop considerations. The reader will notice that each article follows a similar flow and pattern and that the theme across all technologies is similar: Patient selection and education is the key to ultimate success with premium IOL technology.
Each author offers a thorough review of the processes involved with implanting a premium IOL, and while each has his different preferred IOL, our contributors are in agreement that a new mindset is required when considering these IOLs — for surgeon and patient. Much of the challenge in selecting premium IOLs is in the objective measures involved. It seems that a surgeon can have the most precise biometry, the easiest eye and the best technology, but if the patient’s personality doesn’t fit a certain profile, the surgeon cannot achieve patient satisfaction.
