Information
on getting a first job.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) offers a free online course on its Web site titled "Getting Your First Job in Ophthalmology." This section of the AAO site is designed to meet the needs of young ophthalmologists (YOs) seeking information on career development. From the "Getting Your First Job in Ophthalmology" menu, you may choose from the following topics: Evaluating Practice Opportunities, The Interview Process, Your Initial Contract and Analyzing Financials.
Section 1, entitled "Evaluating Practice Opportunities," covers a number of important considerations for YOs such as the kind of practice situation they envision themselves in, the dynamics in different settings, geographic factors and compensation.
Section 2, "The Interview Process," is a lesson that provides YOs with an understanding of how to secure, prepare for and conduct an interview. Upon completion of the lesson, users will be able to:
- recognize the components of an effective cover letter
- recognize the components of an effective CV
- identify the protocols in pre-interview contacts
- identify the function of the personal interview
- recognize the elements of a good interview
- identify the benefits of including your spouse in the interview
- formulate answers to the most commonly asked interview questions
- formulate a list of questions to ask the interviewer.
Section 3, "Your Initial Contract," provides information for understanding the details of a contract. This lesson covers the following: Structuring Your Initial Contract, Bonuses, Other Benefits, Covenants, Co-Ownership and Other Contracts
Section 4, "Analyzing the Financials," reviews practice finances to help evaluate the financial health of the practice a YO may be considering joining.
To take part in these valuable lessons, go to the AAO Web site www.aao.org and select "Getting Your First Job in Ophthalmology." Fill out the survey sheet and then begin learning.
