Focus on Surgical Microscopes
M844 PREMIUM OPHTHALMIC MICROSCOPE
Leica Microsystems, Inc.
The M844 is Leica's premium-class surgical microscope for ophthalmology. Using APO Optichrome optics in combination with the new SlimStand F40, the M844 is specifically designed to meet the needs of the surgeon, the operating room staff and the patient.
The SlimStand features a small footprint and long net reach for easy positioning and maneuverability. Leica says its exclusive direct halogen illumination provides superior resolution, contrast and color, as well as safety for the patient. The control unit and video monitor are packaged as one unit on the stand, offering intuitive control over all of the microscope's functions. The StepCycle allows the surgeon to pre-program the microscope functions for each step of a surgical procedure, saving precious time.
Leica states that its original ophthalmic surgical microscope, the M690, is the most popular-selling microscope of all time and still used in many facilities worldwide. The Leica M501 microscope compact system is ideal for use by anterior segment surgeons and easy for the staff to operate.

OMS-800 OPERATION MICROSCOPE
Topcon Medical Systems
Topcon introduces the OMS-800 Operation Microscope with Optical Fiber Free Intravitreal Surgery System (OFFISS). This system allows for bimanual vitrectomies and other types of retinal surgeries without the need of handheld fiber-optic illumination. The OMS-800 features refinements such as a double focusing mechanism, electromagnetic locks, and a programmable footswitch. Topcon says the OMS-800 is suitable for all ophthalmic operations, including cataracts, refractive and muscle surgery. The company also notes that the OMS-800 offers comfort for the surgeon and assistant plus clear, bright views of the structures of the eye and total control over all mechanical and electronic functions.

OPMI VISU MICROSCOPES
Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc.
Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc. has completely redesigned its line of microscopes for ophthalmic surgery. The company says the OPMI VISU 140 offers all of the basic functions necessary for efficient cataract surgery, including a main lens and zoom optics that are apochromatically corrected, and co-axial illumination for an excellent red reflex. Zeiss considers the OPMI VISU 140 the system of choice for outpatient hospitals or small clinics because its economical price fits into any investment budget.
The OPMI VISU 160 is designed for both anterior- and posterior-segment procedures. Its DeepView depth-of-field management system enables adjustment for optimizing either depth of field or light transmission and resolution. The OPMI VISU 210, with new Superlux Eye xenon illumination, provides a white light that Zeiss says meets even the highest demands, resulting in a bright, high-contrast image with natural color. The VISU 210 is a unique assistant's microscope, with almost weightless positioning due to magnetic locking brakes which complete the system.

Volk Optical's Chalam AFX SSV ACS lens provides visualization in an air-filled eye. |
|
EXPANDED RETINAL LENS LINE
Volk Optical has expanded its Chalam line with the addition of the AFX SSV ACS lens. The lens was developed specifically for visualization of the retina in an air-filled eye after air/fluid exchange during vitrectomy. The AFX lens, designed in conjunction with Saad Shaikh, M.D., features a self-stabilizing vitrectomy (SSV) design with a low profile, and can be steam-sterilized, reducing processing time and cost per use.
The SSV design holds the lens on the cornea without the need for a suture ring. This feature can reduce patient trauma as well as surgical prep time. The low profile and sutureless design of the lens is well-suited for use with noncontact viewing systems, providing excellent visualization in 25-gauge vitrectomy procedures.

The Rhein Medical Rousseau Axis Marker attaches to the slit lamp. |
|
SLIT LAMP MOUNTED AXIS MARKER
Rhein Medical's Rousseau Slit-Lamp Mounted Axis Marker, developed in coordination with Paul B. Rousseau, is designed to mark the X and Y coordinates at the 6 and 9 o'clock positions for accurate axial alignment. Rhein says because the marker is
mounted on your slit lamp, the guesswork associated with handheld markers is eliminated. Etched calibration marks align with most standard Goldmann tonometer housing units to ensure horizontal alignment.
The marker is reusable and autoclaveable, made of stainless steel, and available for a 30-day evaluation without obligation.
