SOVEREIGN
Advanced Medical Optics
The Sovereign and Sovereign Compact with WhiteStar Technology provide digitally modulated phaco that AMO says dramatically reduces the amount of phaco energy directed into the eye, while providing full ultrasound cutting efficiency and clearer corneas.
The Sovereign and Sovereign WhiteStar Compact with WhiteStar also offer a choice of disposable guillotine or reusable oscillating anterior vitrectomy options.

ACCURUS
Alcon
Alcon's new Accurus XS4 enhancement with 3D technology represents a significant advance over previous Accurus surgical systems. Upgrades include procedural-based memory selection and foot-pedal customization, allowing the surgeon to control high-performance 2,500 cpm vitrectomy probes and new 3D (Dual Dynamic Drive) technology.
The 3D technology gives the surgeon simultaneous linear control of both the cutting speed and vacuum level to manage various tissue densities without changing machine parameters. Both the 3D technology and 2,500 CM vitrectomy probes are designed for ease of use and enhanced efficiency.
The Accurus also advances technology with the addition of 25-gauge instrumentation. Among the ready-to-use instruments are high-performance, lightweight pneumatic vitrectomy probes, exquisite fluidics, an easy-entry trocar/cannula system and Grieshaber's Revolution DSP instrumentation. The Accurus system now supports the new Xenon High-Brightness Illuminator for improved visibility in surgery.

HORIZON SYSTEM
American Optisurgical
The Horizon Phacoemulsification System from American Optisurgical provides complete anterior cataract surgery functions including irrigation, multi-modulation phacoemulsification, irrigation/aspiration, anterior vitrectomy and bipolar coagulation.
Vitrectomy mode offers linear vacuum, linear flow, both, or panel, fixed-type operation and cut. Using a disposable or semi-disposable pneumatically powered guillotine cutter, the available cut rate is from 60 to 700 cuts per minute. The lightweight, portable Horizon system features a large LCD touch screen and user-friendly controls.
The latest addition to the American Optisurgical Incis phaco line is the former Mentor SIStem, which is also capable of performing anterior vitrectomy.

MILLENNIUM
Bausch & Lomb
The Millennium microsurgical system incorporates the 25-gauge TSV system for trans-conjunctival standard vitrectomy. This system provides total access through a micro-incision, which eliminates the need for conjunctival dissection and a large scleral incision. The TSV system features microsurgical alignment cannulas and the 25-gauge Lightning high-speed cutter, which B&L says is the only electric cutter available employing 1,500 nonpulsating cuts per minute with less vibration than pneumatic cutters. Illumination is provided through a 25-gauge high output, true white light.
B&L says the less invasive, streamlined entry and exit offered by the cost-effective Millennium system eliminates time-consuming steps in opening and closing, allowing more time to concentrate on the vitrectomy and retinal procedure.

VISITREC
BD Ophthalmic Systems
BD's compact and portable Visitrec vitrectomy unit has long been a powerful tool for vitrectomy-related procedures. Now, the company has added a 23-gauge guillotine cutter to the options available with the unit. The new cutter can fit through an 0.6-mm incision that doesn't require sutures, which means that many vitrectomy procedures can now be performed in-office.
The guillotine cutter comes sterile and ready-to-use. It also has a microvitreoretinal blade built into the tip.
The vitrectomy unit itself has numerous advantages. It's small and portable, and because it's battery-powered, it sets up in seconds. The cutting speed is adjustable from 60 to 400 cuts per minute, and the handpiece is automated, featuring a linear-activated cutter. Several other guillotine size options are available.

SONIC WAVE
STAAR Surgical
The Sonic Wave is a combined sonic/ultrasonic phacoemulsifier with pneumatically activated anterior vitrectomy function.
The vitrectomy probe has an adjustable cut rate from 50 to 800 cuts per minute, and is available in single-use disposable, or reusable styles. The Wave tubing packs are also available as disposable or reusable. The STAAR vitrector can be used coaxially or bimanually, and the cutting function can be disengaged via footswitch control to allow for irrigation/aspiration only through the 20-gauge cannula. The Wave allows the user to choose between linear vacuum or linear aspiration function.

The Strauss CK Marker aids in performing accurate CK
procedures. |

STRAUSS CK MARKER
Katena introduces the Strauss CK Marker, designed by Glenn Strauss, M.D., of Tyler, Texas, to imprint a symmetrical pattern of 24 dots (or "pilot holes") on the cornea in preparation for performing a Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) procedure.
The radius of the instrument conforms to the curvature of the cornea, with the 24 points arranged in three rings of eight points each at the 6, 7 and 8mm optic zones. When inked, these sharp points provide 24 landmarks on the cornea, in addition to small pilot holes for increased accuracy when placing the probe tip. The instrument also features a 2.5-mm targeting ring for centering the marker over the cornea.
