Focus on Phacoemulsifiers
INFINITI
Alcon
The Infiniti Vision System gives you three ways to remove a cataract: Using ultrasound alone, combining ultrasound and oscillation by using the NeoSoniX handpiece, or with the AquaLase liquefaction device (a new technology).
Note that Alcon's Legacy system is still available. Legacy includes the AdvanTec hardware/software package and, like the Infiniti, the NeoSoniX.

HORIZON
American Optisurgical
The Horizon Phacoemulsification System is lightweight and portable. It provides "complete" anterior cataract surgery functions, including irrigation, multimodulation phacoemulsification, irrigation/aspiration, anterior vitrectomy and bipolar coagulation.
Moreover, the Horizon has a large liquid-crystal-display touchscreen with controls that let surgeons preset the system for six user programs. Other Horizon features include Burst Mode, an infrared or wired remote control, a programmable foot pedal and an "easy loading" tubing cartridge.

SOVEREIGN COMPACT
AMO
The Sovereign Compact debuted at this year's American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) meeting. The Sovereign Compact offers the fluidics and the advanced power control of the Sovereign, including providing the option of WhiteStar technology.
The Sovereign Compact delivers "rock-solid chamber stability" through its programmable Occlusion Mode. And the system's Power Matrix provides a range of options to disassemble the nucleus.

DODICK LASER PHOTOLYSIS
A.R.C.
The Dodick Laser PhotoLysis System is a multipurpose indirect Nd:YAG laser unit that's FDA-approved for 1.2-mm laser cataract extraction. The Dodick, which uses disposable probes, has a Venturi aspiration system. In addition, you can use the Dodick's Venturi Phaco System as a conventional or dual-linear system.
New advances in the Dodick include Max-Vac tubing, which allows for vacuum aspiration up to 600-mm Hg, and new probe designs featuring a 0.9-mm outside diameter.

MILLENNIUM
B&L
The Millennium Microsurgical System incorporates dual linear technology. This technology gives you simultaneous, independent control of aspiration and ultrasound.
The Millennium also lets you use phaco burst mode, and features software-enhanced power modulation, programmable pulse width range, and linear control of burst interval, with the "lowest ultrasound frequency available" (28.5 kHz).

SONIC WAVE
STAAR
STAAR says its Sonic Wave is two machines in one, allowing the surgeon to choose either low frequency sonic energy (40 to 400 Hz) or traditional ultrasonic energy (40,000 Hz).
The Sonic Wave's latest accessory is the Cruise Control device, which provides fluidic stability during high vacuum and aspiration of the cataract. According to STAAR, "The Cruise Control eliminates fluidic surges and enhances stability within the anterior chamber." It's compatible with both peristaltic and Venturi phacoemulsifiers.

The Kershner Butterfly Capsulorrhexis Forceps are available with either a short or long handle. |
|
BUTTERFLY FORCEPS
Developed in coordination with Robert M. Kershner, M.D., the Kershner Butterfly Capsulorrhexis Forceps have finger grips for tearing the flap and direct-acting jaws for controlling the flap.
The distal blades of the forceps have cystotome tips to open and grasp a capsule in one step. The shape of the blades allows the forceps to reach all areas of the capsule without lifting up on the incision; a gap between the blades prevents inadvertent capture of the iris.
Moreover, the forceps' "rugged" design prohibits tip misalignment when the operator applies uneven pressure to the handles.

VITREORETINAL TOOLS
Alcon is launching the Grieshaber Revolution DSP line (www.grieshaberrevolution.com). These three disposable intraocular instruments are designed for vitreoretinal surgery. All three rotate 360º, eliminate cross-contamination concerns and reduce cost of ownership, according to
Alcon.
The DSP instruments include:
- Fiber Optic Forceps, which eliminate passive egress
- Vertical Scissors, which have a distal design to aid in establishing the cleavage plane
- End Grasping Forceps, which have a fine tip to enhance visualization.
In other Alcon news, the company's silicone oil, Silikon 1000, is now eligible for pass-through reimbursement under Medicare's hospital outpatient prospective payment system when you use Silikon 1000 in hospital outpatient surgical procedures. The code for billing is C1814.
For more information, visit www.silikon1000.com or refer to the Program Memorandum, Section III.A., published in the Federal Register, April 2, 2003. (Subject: April 2003 Update of the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System [OPPS].)

PATIENT-ASSIST
At ASCRS, Topcon unveiled the BV-1000, which the company claims is the world's first patient-assisted intelligent refraction system.
The BV-1000 includes an objective simultaneous binocular auto refractor, auto keratometry, an automatic chart projector, a patient-driven vision tester and a software system with voice interaction and "coaching" features.
The BV system also features electronic documentation and display of necessary refraction data, including an 8" x 11" prescription printout. This system prevents transcription errors and lets you retain the information for automated patient record-keeping or data export.
