The Complete Ophthalmic Analysis System (COAS), from WaveFront Sciences, has been recognized by R&D Magazine.

COAS WINS AWARD
Each year, R&D Magazine recognizes the 100 most technologically significant products introduced to the marketplace. This year, at R&D Magazine's 40th Annual R&D 100 Awards, one of the winners was the Complete Ophthalmic Analysis System (COAS) from WaveFront Sciences.

The COAS is a wavefront sensor that detects primary and higher-order aberrations. It measures sphere and cylinder within 0.1D.

The COAS incorporates the company's patented Complete Light Analysis System-2D technology, which has been used for years in various optics and laser metrology applications.

NEW HELP FOR DRY EYE
Cynacon/OcuSoft has introduced Hydrate Essential, a new dry eye medication that combines proprietary liposome technology with peer-reviewed ingredients.

Hydrate Essential contains flaxseed oil, which is an n-3 fatty acid. The company says, "Many reports have linked flaxseed oil to increased comfort when used to manage dry eye. Researchers suggest that n-3 fatty acids may benefit an individual's skin, mucosa, cardiovascular system and central nervous system."

Hydrate Essential also contains evening primrose oil, which has a high concentration of gamma-linolenic acid, a rare, essential fatty acid.

The flaxseed oil and primrose oil are combined with an inflammation-fighting bilberry extract. All three are all micro-encapsulated with hydroxylated lecithin liposomes, resulting in improved absorption.

The Brown LASEK Nested Trephine and Well from Rhein Medical. The well is 9.5 mm; the trephine is 9 mm.

Rhein Medical has added the Brown LASEK Nested Trephine and Well to its catalog.

The surgeon places the well on the cornea and the trephine inside the well. The trephine has two hinge areas, which let you score the center epithelium, so you can peel the epithelium back toward the two hinges from the center outward. Rhein Medical believes this tool makes the process easier and less cumbersome.

MICROPHACO SYSTEM
The American Surgical Instruments Corporation (ASICO) is responding to the popularity of the microphaco incision with the Microphaco System.

ASICO's Microphaco System is designed to accommodate a microphaco incision of approximately 1.0 to 1.5 mm. All the instruments in the System are 21- to 23-gauge and will fit through an incision of this size. (The absence of irrigation makes it possible to use a smaller phaco handpiece.)

The ThinProfile is an eyelid-implant weight for patients with thin eyelid skin.

EYELID CLOSURE
FCI Ophthalmics is now the domestic distributor of MedDev Eyelid Closure products.

Two of the products in the line, the Contour and the ThinProfile, are eyelid-implant weights, both sold sterile. They're made from 99.99% pure gold and are available in sizes ranging from 0.6 grams to 1.6 grams.

The MedDev Eyelid Closure line also includes the Skin Tone External Eyelid Weights and the Tantalum Eyelid Weight Sizing Sets. Skin Tone weights are a nonsurgical alternative to implanting eyelid weights; they provide an immediate blink mechanism for patients with temporary or protracted facial paralysis. The Tantalum Sets permit determination of the proper size of eyelid implant or external weight.
