AREDS FORMULATION

Alcon, Inc., has responded to the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) by developing the ICaps AREDS Formula dietary supplement. The ICaps AREDS formula contains the same ingredients used in the study, including high levels of antioxidants and minerals (vitamins E and C, zinc, copper and beta carotene). As you know, the study demonstrated that these ingredients significantly reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration.

The ICaps AREDS supplement comes in a small tablet size and a time-release formulation, designed to make ICaps AREDS easy to swallow and digest. The company notes that this is especially important for older patients who tend to have more trouble swallowing and digesting large tablets.

QUICK DRY EYE TEST

Surgical Specialties has added Zone-Quick, a dry eye test, to its UltraPlug Punctum Plug line. Zone-Quick lets you test for dry eye in 15 seconds.

Zone-Quick provides a yellow cotton thread which is placed inside the lower eyelid. Once the thread comes in contact with tears, it darkens to light red. You determine the severity of dry eye by comparing the red portion of the thread to the measuring chart on the back of the thread's sterile packet.

The test is safe, fast and accurate with no pain or discomfort for the patient, says Surgical Specialties.

Each sterile packet contains two cotton threads, and a Zone-Quick box includes 50 sterile packets.

	One of the many features of Charting Plus 4.3 is a security-privilege module, which lets an administrator restrict information access to specific individuals or groups.

HIPAA-APPROVED

The MediNotes Corporation reports that its Charting Plus 4.3 software has been certified for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations by experts at the HIPAA Academy.

"Over the past 14 months," says a MediNotes spokesperson, "we've added or enhanced features to meet all applicable HIPAA regulations. Most of the elements were already in place for HIPAA regulations; it was just a matter of enhancing some elements, such as password security, audit trails and program logout."

Other enhancements that Medi-Notes has made to Charting Plus 4.3 include:

• the ability to pull stored information into a new note from a past note or from information documented in the patient's chart independent of a note
• a comprehensive rule-based program for preventive medicine
• custom History of Present Illness dialogs with Evaluation and Management support
• the ability to customize templates so that specific exam elements are required before a doctor saves a note.

These additions and enhancements made to Charting Plus 4.3 now make it an option for large clinics and university settings. (Previously, MediNotes only sold Charting Plus to small and medium clinics.)

THE SOFT TOUCH

Live Eyewear has added Soft Touch coloring on all models of its Cocoons sunglasses. Cocoons, as you may know, are polarized sunglasses engineered to be worn over prescription eyewear.

Prio, the company that specializes in computer vision care, has redesigned the Nearpoint Rod (NPR). The Prio NPR makes testing at near and intermediate distances faster, easier and more convenient, according to a Prio spokesperson.

Prio's redesign of the NPR addresses the common complaint that the original rod keeps "getting in the way." The Prio NPR:
