LASIK SPECULUM
Rhein Medical and Roger Steinert, M.D., have created the Steinert II LASIK Speculum. The Speculum is designed to complement today's microkeratomes. Features include:
- Solid blades keep lashes, drapes and meibomian secretions away from the operative field.
- The curve in each blade matches the diameter of the suction ring, allowing maximum exposure in patients with tight orbits.
- Cutouts on each blade's anterior portion reduce obstruction when you perform the microkeratome pass, whe-ther the pass is sliding or rotational.

The Steinert II LASIK Speculum is available in aspirating and nonaspirating models. |

Three new instruments from ASICO: the Bi-Manual Nagahara Irrigating Chopper (top), the Bi-Manual Nagahara Irrigating Karate Chopper (middle) and the Tsuneoka Irrigating Chopper (bottom). |

CATARACT AIDS
The American Surgical Instruments Corporation (ASICO) has added three choppers to its catalog.
The Bi-Manual Nagahara Irrigating Chopper has an irrigation port located at the bend of the chopper to keep the chamber firm. A 60š edge lets you cut in the same direction as the phacoemulsification handpiece.
The Bi-Manual Nagahara Irrigating Karate Chopper is for nuclei of grade three or higher. The Karate Chopper's spear-shaped tip lets you divide the nucleus into four quadrants. An ASICO spokesperson says the Karate Chopper is safe and effective to use within the posterior capsule and ideal for small pupils and small capsulorhexis.
The Tsuneoka Irrigating Chopper is a second-hand instrument that manipulates the nucleus through the side port during phaco. ASICO designed the Tsuneoka Chopper for chopping and dividing nuclei of grades one to three. You can also use the Tsuneoka Chopper during the irrigation/aspiration part of the procedure.

ACUVUE NEWS
Vistakon has expanded its line of Acuvue Toric contact lenses to include new plus and high-minus powers. The company believes the expanded parameters will enable you to successfully fit more patients with astigmatism.
Vistakon has also repackaged its Acuvue Toric and Acuvue 2 contact lenses. Box size has been reduced 43%, which should save storage space for both you and your patients. Plus, inside the box, the primary blister packaging has a new foil seal and a larger bowl to make it easier to remove the lenses.

AUTO KNIFE
At the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Diamatrix unveiled the Saf-T-Guide, a stainless-steel ophthalmic knife.
The Saf-T-Guide has an active safety feature; the blade is self-retracting and spring-actuated. The blade comes out of the handle when you press down on the the fixation ring with one hand and hold the handle with your other hand.
The fixation ring is built-in, which Diamatrix believes will help you make an accurate incision, whether your technique is clear or near-clear.
