IRIDEX OFFERINGS
At the AAO meeting in Orlando, Fla., this year, Iridex displayed four new products: The OcuLight Symphony multi-wavelength laser delivery system, a 5-mm Large Spot Slit Lamp Adapter and two new disposable endophotocoagulation probes.
|
|
The Iris Medical OcuLight Symphony Laser System combines the 532-nm, 810-nm and large spot 810-nm wavelengths into one delivery device. |
|
The Iris Medical OcuLight Sympho-ny Laser System consists of an OcuLight SLx infrared (810 nm) laser console, an OcuLight GLx green (532 nm) laser console, a multi-fiber slit lamp adapter (532 nm, 810 nm and large-spot 810 nm), a slit lamp, and a custom cart. Iridex describes the OcuLight Symphony as an advanced, top-of-the-line system that provides solid-state reliability in an integrated package indicated for retinal photocoagulation and glaucoma procedures.
The 5-mm Large Spot Slit Lamp Adapter is designed for use with the OcuLight SLx (810 nm) laser; it should increase flexibility for surgeons performing a transpupillary thermotherapy protocol to treat age-related macular degeneration or intraocular tumors. This adapter offers the largest spot size available on the market, says an Iridex spokesperson.
The Iris Medical EndoProbe Hand-pieces line now includes the BriteLight Illuminating EndoProbe and the 25-gauge EndoProbe. The BriteLight Illuminating EndoProbe provides "the brightest white light illumination, compared to other devices with laser delivery," and the 25-gauge EndoProbe is compatible with sutureless vitrectomy instrumentation systems currently available on the market.

TRANSITIONS MONOGRAPH
Transitions Optical, Inc., released the monograph "Light, Sight and Photochromics" at the AAO. The monograph focuses on the latest research in vision-related quality of life (VRQOL), a relatively new area of clinical investigation.
The monograph, which includes a list of suggested reading, explores several topics, including:
- Light and sight. An overview, including the relationship between light and sight, the damaging effects of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), how to protect eyes from UVR, and lens options and their advantages and disadvantages.
- Color vision. An exploration of this inherent part of most people's visual experience, and how it should be understood in relation to VRQOL.
- Contrast sensitivity and glare acuity. A discussion of these two aspects of vision, which aren't fully revealed by a traditional Snellen 20/20 visual acuity test, but have a role in VRQOL.
For a copy of the monograph, call Transitions.

The HRA2 can image the retina through pupils that are poorly dilated or haven't been dilated at all. |
|
HRA UPDATE
Also at the AAO meeting, Heidelberg Engineering unveiled the Heidelberg Retina Angiograph 2 (HRA2).
The HRA2 is the smallest scanning laser ophthalmoscope for angiography, and it offers the highest image contrast and detail available, according to Heidelberg. The HRA2 also features increased resolution, infrared and blue reflectance, and a touchscreen.
Additionally, the HRA2 emits only about 1% of the light used by a standard fundus camera. This should make the HRA2 safer and more comfortable for patients because they're not subjected to such a bright light.
"The HRA2 adds significantly higher resolution in a novel, compact and more portable design," says Bert Glaser, M.D., "making it the best system with which to detect and monitor retinal and choroidal diseases, including choroidal neovascularization, retinal angiomatous proliferation and feeder vessels. At the same time, it provides superior fluorescein angiography."

The 22-gauge Artisan Lens Holding Forceps feature curved shafts that can fit through a 1.1-mm incision. |
ARTISAN FORCEPS
Rhein Medical has added the Artisan Lens Holding Forceps to its catalog. The forceps let you fixate the implant and place the Artisan lens into the anterior chamber, aligning it precisely to the iris.
The forceps come in two models, direct-acting and reverse-acting. The jaws of the direct-acting forceps close when the handles are compressed; the jaws of the reverse-acting forceps close when the handles are open. Both models grasp one haptic edge, which should give you firm control of the implant.

You can use the Alio Capsulorrhexis Forceps through a paracentesis as small as 0.6 mm. |
MICS FORCEPS
Jorge Alio, M.D., Ph.D., has designed the Alio Capsulorrhexis Forceps for his micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS) technique.
The forceps feature micro-sized triangular tips that can puncture and grasp the capsule, so it's possible to perform the capsulorrhexis with a single instrument. The thin, curved shaft lets you use the forceps through a very small paracentesis.

WHITE REFRACTOR
The Model 7500-I AutoCross refractor from R.H. Burton Company is now available in the color of "new medical-white." The company believes this color complements most chairs, stands and other exam-lane equipment.
The refractor features the company's patented illumination system, which should help in dimly lit exam rooms, and Tru-Life optics, which Burton says deliver clarity in low light conditions. The refractor also features synchronized cross cylinders.
