"The MediLive ImageBox is the first easy-to-use, digital still image-capture unit designed specifically for the operating room," according to Carl Zeiss Surgical.

The MediLive ImageBox connects to any video camera and records captured images on a CD-R. (Images can be saved as jpeg or tiff files.) You control the process using a footswitch or microscope handgrip.

Captured images may be viewed on a video monitor during and immediately following surgery. Once saved, images can be inserted into presentations, e-mails or case reports.

The MediLive ImageBox will soon feature Ethernet connectivity for retrieving stored images across a hospital network.

Oasis Medical has received FDA approval for the Soft Plug Extended Duration absorbable plug.

The Extended Duration plug lasts 3 months. Oasis designed it to provide comfort for patients suffering from post-surgical dry eye. You insert the plug in the canaliculus with jeweler's forceps. The plug is available in 0.4 mm and 0.5 mm sizes.

Oasis sells the Extended Duration plug at $6 per plug -- 20 pair per box.

EPITHELIAL CELL REMOVER

New to Rhein Medical's catalog is the Hardten LASIK Flap Epithelial Remov-al Platform.

You place the Platform under a reflected LASIK flap near the hinge, then place the flap on top of the Platform and use a spatula to scrape the flap free of epithelial cells.

The anterior surface of the Platform is flat, making removal of cells easy and manageable. The distal end has a flat segment, making it easy to advance the Platform up against the hinge.

Herbert Nevyas, M.D., has developed the Nevyas Soft IOL Manipulator for Katena Instruments. You use the instrument to manipulate a soft IOL after insertion. The Manipulator ensures that the lens is completely in the capsular bag.

The Manipulator has a textured tip that "provides sufficient traction on the IOL surface to rotate it without damaging the optic," according to Katena.
