EXTRACAPSULAR FORCEPS
Rhein Medical has introduced the Brannon Extracapsular Cleaving and Removal Forceps.
The stainless Cleaving Forceps (pictured above) fracture a nucleus through a small incision in the anterior chamber. The forceps cut through a nucleus, leaving a nuclear segment inside the upper part of the forceps (i.e., the cleaver). After removing the Cleaving Forceps through the incision, you reintroduce the forceps to fracture and remove the remaining nuclear segments.
The Nucleus Removal Forceps (also pictured above) grasp and remove smaller fractured nuclear fragments through a small incision. Rhein Medical says the windows of the blades allow you to maneuver within your patient's anterior chamber with firm control over the nuclear fragments.

STRIAE REMOVAL
Akorn presents the Donnenfeld Striae Removal Instruments.
The Donnenfeld set consists of a spatula and titanium forceps. You use the forceps to hold your patient's elevated LASIK flap, while using the spatula to massage the surface and undersurface of the flap.
The forceps have a Y-shaped tip for stable fixation. The spatula is curved, 10 mm long and 3 mm wide.

The angled shanks of the Ginsberg Speculum can open and close while the handle lies flat along your patient's
temple. |
SPECULUM
Stephen Ginsberg, M.D., has designed a speculum to prevent excessive lid tissue and lashes from entering the surgical field.
The Ginsberg Speculum features solid, non-reflective blades, which angle upward on the ends to control lid skin folds that often can't be retained by the blades of standard speculums.
The conjunctival sides of the blades are fenestrated and short to facilitate easy insertion and removal. The fenestrated blades also minimize the pressure that you apply to the globe once you open the speculum and put it in the locked position.
Dr. Ginsberg says that the speculum is ideal for use during most procedures, including cataract surgery, refractive laser surgery, pterygium, strabismus and corneal transplants as well as posterior region surgeries.

MACULOPATHIES
Gulden Ophthalmics now offers the Eger Macular Stressometer (EMS). The EMS is a hand-held diagnostic instrument that lets you identify patients who show signs of macular degeneration and other macular disturbances, such as cystoid macula edema and central serous choroidopathy.
The EMS works by first stressing the macula with a controlled dazzling light burst. Then, a synchronized digital timer measures and records recovery time.
Built into the EMS is a distance-positioning line to ensure that patient-to-instrument distance remains constant. The EMS is accurate to whole seconds.
A spokesperson for Gulden Ophthalmics says, "Now, with the EMS, you can test patients in your office in less than 5 minutes. Plus, we provide the EMS with clinical norms for recovery time, clustered by age group."

SCALPEL
New from Oasis Medical: the Feather scalpel, for your paracentesis procedures.
The scalpel is an angled 20-guage microvitreoretinal (MVR) knife. It's available with a reusable metal handle (packaged five per box in individual autoclavable cases) or with a single-use disposable plastic handle (packaged five per box in sterile blister packs). An Oasis Medical spokesperson says, "Though the reusable knives are slightly more expensive, they offer you, the physician, a cost-savings advantage per procedure over single-use, plastic-handle knives."
Besides offering angled MVR knives, Oasis Medical also offers straight MVR knives that come in gauges 19, 20 and 23.
