Richard Gable, Ph.D., M.B.A, and
chief executive officer of Dynamic Health Connections, Inc., in Lake Forest,
Calif., says that while the primary emphasis when hiring new employees has been
on intellectual skills, research indicates that IQ has less to do with
outstanding performance than emotional intelligence.
He defines
emotional intelligence as the capacity to recognize your own and others
feelings, to motivate yourself and manage emotions in yourself and others.
Emotional
intelligence comprises:
Personal competence. This refers
to how a person manages himself. It includes self-awareness and
self-management.
Social competence. This
category concerns how well a person handles relationships.
