IRIDEX Corporation has a new approach to treating ocular tumors that could spare your patients such traumatic treatments as enucleation.
The transpupillary thermotherapy technique (TTT) uses the IRIS Medical OcuLight SLx infrared laser to create hyperthermia localized to retinoblastomas, choroidal melanomas and choroidal hemangiomas that are less than 4 mm in diameter.
The company says that TTT seems to be as effective in treating these tumors as enucleation, radiation therapy, local resections and conventional laser photocagulation. Plus, it causes fewer traumatic complications such as damage to adjacent macula or nerves.
