Due to antibiotic overuse in recent years, many pathogens have developed resistance to drugs, as you know. But heres new information indicating that changes in pathogens might have some unexpected good sides.
A study conducted by D.F. Sahm, chief scientific officer of Medical Research Laboratories (MRL), told the 39th annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy that the Escherichia coli bacteria that cause urinary tract infections are now more susceptible to ciprofloxacin than they are to the standard therapy, which is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
It may also be true that pathogens that cause eye disease are developing new vulnerabilities as well as resistances. Dr. Sahm suggests that physicians continuously monitor pathogens for resistance trends.
