The American Academy of Ophthalmology says that eye problems can be proof positive of child abuse and that you should check an infants eyes if you suspect hes been mistreated.
Pediatric ophthalmologist Michael R. Redmond says, "One of the most characteristic injuries of shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is retinal hemorrhaging. More than 75% of all severely shaken babies have retinal hemorrhaging, a symptom rarely seen with an accidental head injury."
Although there are no external signs of abuse on children who have been shaken severely, only 15% of them escape permanent damage. Blindness, hearing loss, learning disabilities, brain damage, paralysis or seizures, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and even death commonly occur.
