Robert Snyder, M.D., and Eric Donnenfeld, M.D., believe it’s time to consider using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) exclusively in many cases because they:

• prevent cystoid macular edema better than corticosteroids
• don’t inhibit epithelial healing as much as corticosteroids
• don’t minimize tissue strength in healing wounds
• avoid corticosteroid-induced glaucoma
• minimize the risk of opportunistic infections, slightly associated with corticosteroids
• provide both anesthetic and analgesic effects that steroids don’t offer
• minimize photophobia better.
