The easier the care regimen, the more likely your patients are to follow it, right? This means that a new lens care system might be just the thing for them.
PuriLens of Tampa, Fla., has received approval to market a soft lens care system that disinfects without chemicals or heat. It also cleans without surfactants, enzymes or daily digital lens rubbing.
The system creates a hydrodynamic shear in the preservative-free solution. The shear strips debris from the lens surface. Patients rinse their contact lenses with the solution and place them in a lens holder that fits into a PuriLens unit. They then fill the unit with the solution, put the top on and start the cycle. In 15 minutes the unit shuts off automatically and the contact lenses are ready to wear. Patients can leave their lenses in the unit for as long as 24 hours, or overnight.
The annual cost of the system is comparable to that of multipurpose solutions and 50% less than hydrogen peroxide or chemical-based systems.
