SpyGlass Pharma has acquired Advanced Vision Science (AVS), an intraocular lens (IOL) manufacturer owned by Santen Pharmaceutical, for approximately $13 million in cash, giving SpyGlass manufacturing capacity for the IOL used in its investigational BIM-IOL System.
AVS currently supplies the IOLs being used in SpyGlass’s 2 phase 3 registrational trials of the BIM-IOL System. The platform combines a monofocal IOL with drug-eluting components designed to provide sustained delivery of bimatoprost following cataract surgery in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
SpyGlass said the acquisition also could support development of additional lenses compatible with its drug-delivery technology, including toric and extended-depth-of-focus IOLs.
Under the transaction, California-based AVS will continue manufacturing several IOLs exclusively for Santen for sale in Japan. AVS also will continue licensing its glistening-free hydrophobic acrylic lens material to Bausch+Lomb for the enVista IOL line and manufacturing products for other IOL companies.
AVS has manufactured ophthalmic devices since 1975 and operates an ISO 13485-certified quality system. Its manufacturing facility is registered with the FDA and Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
