Kala Bio and Virotek have finalized an agreement giving Kala exclusive US distribution and reseller rights for Virotek’s ophthalmology genetic testing and screening program, the companies reported in a press release.
The agreement, effective September 4, has an initial term of 1 year, with continued exclusivity dependent on Kala meeting agreed commercial milestones. Kala will market, promote, distribute, and resell the program, while Virotek will manage kit supply, specimen processing, clinical reporting, and other program infrastructure. The companies said they will share profits after Virotek recovers its program costs. Additional financial terms and the commercial milestones required to maintain exclusivity were not disclosed.
The companies cited inherited retinal diseases as one potential application for the program, including retinitis pigmentosa, choroideremia, and achromatopsia. The agreement also gives Kala a right of first refusal for certain ophthalmology products and services that Virotek may seek to sell or license to third parties. The companies said they may expand the arrangement to include oncology, preventive health, telehealth, and other distribution channels.
