September 27, 2024 — Carl Zeiss Meditec AG reports that its Micor 700, the first handheld device designed for lens extraction using its non-ultrasound lens extraction (NULEX) approach, is now available in the United States. This device marks a shift from traditional phacoemulsification, which relies on ultrasonic energy. By eliminating the need for ultrasonic energy during lens removal, the NULEX procedure minimizes thermal stress and reduces the risk of tissue damage.

The Micor 700 combines patented crystalline lens extraction technology with a single-use “plug and play” system that has a small operating room footprint. According to the company, the fully disposable fluidics system saves time and minimizes cross-contamination risks, while the blunt, rounded tip of the Micor 700 is designed to minimize the risk of tissue damage when moved within the capsular bag.
