Keeler's Vantage Plus Indirect Ophthalmoscope
By Leslie Goldberg, Assistant Editor
Keeler's (Berkshire, United Kingdom) compact Vantage Plus indirect ophthalmoscope uses a patented intelligent optical system that automatically changes both the optics and mirrors when the aperture is adjusted. Its one-touch control allows effortless views of the retina with the maximum stereopsis through all pupil sizes.
When a user selects the small, medium or large aperture, the optics automatically adjust, providing three-dimensional stereoscopic views of the retina.
■ Large Pupil. When looking through a large, fully dilated pupil the optics are separated and the light source remains in the upper position, achieving maximum stereopsis.
■ Small Pupil. When looking through a small pupil, the optics and light source are converged, achieving maximum stereopsis.
■ Intermediate Pupil. When looking through partially dilated pupils, the optics and light source are partially converged, achieving maximum stereopsis.
Additional Features

The device also has new, high- contrast optics with bright xenon illumination, ensuring sharper, glare-free views of the retina, says Keeler. The new optics use less power than previous versions, doubling battery life, whether metal hydride or lithium, to over 240 minutes of continuous use.
Additionally, a patented hi-mag lens provides an additional 1.6x magnification compared to a conventional condensing lens and has a teaching mirror that allows two observers to view the retina at the same time.
The Vantage Plus is 15% lighter and 20% smaller than the existing Vantage indirect ophthalmoscope and has a cushioned, adjustable headband, ensuring balance on all head shapes and sizes. In addition, the Vantage Plus is available in patented wireless technology or wired.
Feedback
"As a pediatric ophthalmologist, I need to be able to follow children and their movements," says Zane Pollard, M.D., of Eye Consultants of Atlanta. "The fact that the Vantage Plus has no wires is very advantageous. If I am going to the hospital for a consult, I just carry it with me."
