PATIENT PERSPECTIVES
CK: A Rejuvenating
Experience
For this patient, conductive keratoplasty
was the catalyst for a life-changing transformation.
By
Beverly Ingram, Fullerton, Calif.
Before conductive keratoplasty (CK), I'd been wearing -- and losing -- reading glasses since my 40s. They were a nuisance, but I thought, "This is the way it is -- you just live with it."
Reading glasses made me feel dowdy. But more important, I found out I looked dowdy. When my husband and I went to visit some old friends, he asked if I'd take my reading glasses from around my neck. He insisted he didn't think I looked frumpy, but I got the message.
A SURPRISING CHANGE
I'd never had trouble with my distance vision, so I couldn't justify the expense of having LASIK just because I was tired of my reading glasses. One day, a fellow Chamber of Commerce member who worked for Dr. Robert Lingua gave a presentation about CK, a new procedure specifically designed to treat presbyopia. I knew immediately that CK was for me and set up an appointment to find out more. I was delighted when Dr. Lingua told me I was a good candidate.

The Surgeon's Turn |
|
Preoperatively, Beverly's distance vision was 20/25 in both eyes, but her near vision in both eyes was > J10. I performed a monovision CK procedure on her left eye, making her near vision J2, while both eyes retained 20/25 distance vision. -- Robert W. The procedure took about 10 minutes. Dr. Lingua said I might feel some pressure, but I didn't feel anything at all. The procedure was over and I was driving myself home before I knew it.
Before I had the procedure, I suspected that advertising overstated the results of CK, but I also knew I'd be satisfied with even minimal improvement. Instead, CK changed my life radically.
My vision improved far more than I'd expected. Not only could I read without my eyeglasses immediately, but I also felt younger and more confident in my work as a marketing representative. I've rediscovered hobbies I used to enjoy, such as karate, and I picked up new ones, such as quilting. But the best part is being able to pick up and read anything, any time of day.
SPREADING THE NEWS
After I had CK, I called everybody I know to tell them about this procedure, singing its praises at my weekly Chamber of Commerce meetings or when I saw my friends. It's so nice to no longer need reading glasses!
What's more, my improved vision sparked a new enthusiasm for improving my appearance. It may seem unimportant, but CK inspired me to pluck my eyebrows for the first time in 20 years! I had a makeup makeover, which I hadn't done in years.
Friends see that I've had immediate success with CK, but they ask how this procedure will affect my long-term vision. I've had periodic examinations since I had the procedure 1 year ago, and my vision's just become better and better. I'm thrilled with the results.
