CATARACT PRODUCTS
Now available from Alcon are a redesigned AcrySof intraocular lens, and a new irrigation/aspiration (I/A) tip.
The AcrySof Single-Piece IOL has been biomechanically designed to conform to the shape of the capsular bag. The AcrySof Single-Piece enables you to implant a 6.0-mm optic through a 3.2-mm (or smaller) incision.
The Silicone I/A Tip is static-metal and covered with a silicone membrane sleeve; a 0.3-mm aspiration port is contained in the silicone portion of the material. You can use the tip with your existing handpieces. The Silicone I/A Tip is available in either of two designs: straight or angled at 45.

ACES HANDBOOK
Speaking of Alcon, they've partnered with the American College of Eye Surgeons (ACES) to launch the "Care and Evaluation of the Cataract Patient Handbook." Richard L. Lindstrom, M.D., says the handbook is "the most complete compendium of cataract surgery information I've seen."
Alcon and ACES designed the handbook to provide a comprehensive review of both pre- and post-op evaluation of cataract patients. The handbook includes management recommendations for post-op complications.
If you'd like to purchase the handbook, contact ACES.

SOVEREIGN UPGRADE
You can now upgrade your Sovereign Phacoemulsification System with Allergan's Software Version 4.0. To upgrade, you simply insert an industry-standard personal computer (PC) card into the Sovereign System.
With the 4.0 upgrade, the Sovereign uses a wider variety of sounds and tones to let you know of vacuum rise, diathermy, side-switch actuation and bezel submode changes. Kurt Heitman, M.D., says, "With the new Sovereign software, there's more feedback telling me what's going on in the eye."

Correction: In the article "Laser Cataract Extraction: Has Its Time Finally Come?" (April 2001, page 118), Ophthalmology Management mistakenly stated that authors I. Howard Fine, M.D., Mark Packer, M.D., and Richard S. Hoffman, M.D., had firsthand experience working with A.R.C. Laser Corporation's Dodick Laser Photolysis System. The authors' report on that system was based on an extensive review of the literature and interviews with a current user in preparation for presentations on new phaco modalities.
Also, the article stated that the system is combined with the Gueder Megatron peristaltic irrigation/aspiration pump. But it currently uses an electronically controlled Venturi-based pressurized infusion system, with ultrasound/phaco capability.
